Here's some bands you should check out:

THERION: My favourite band. They have varied their music a lot over the time, but all CDs from Theli and on have a healthy mix of metal and classical/operatic elements. Some songs to get an idea what they are all about are "Cults of the shadow", "Down the qliphotic tunnel (Therion version)", "Wine of Aluqah", "Midgård", "The blood of Kingu"

RHAPSODY: Power metal with lots of symphonic elements. "Emerald Sword" is a good song to start with.

HAGGARD: Hard to describe their style, it's different from anything else I have heard. "And thou shalt trust... the seer" is a great CD.

Other bands to check out, besides those suggested by others

Edge of Sanity: Swedish death metal from the 90s. No real classical stuff, but at least check out their song "Enigma", it kicks ass and does have a cello

Cruachan: Celtic folk/metal. I usually play Civ3 as the celts, with Cruachan in winamp.

Alchemist: From Australia actually. Style is somewhat related to American pseudo-metal but much better. Creates a feeling of wide open landscapes.

Arcturus: Check out their CD "La Masquerade Infernale" if you want something really different. It's plain weird but it's one of my favourite CDs nevertheless.

Ulver: "Bergtatt" CD. Black metal with lots of clean vocals. Somewhat similar to Vintersorg. As for Vintersorg, I think "Till Fjälls" is a great CD.

Check out this link . Probably a bit old, but it has a large list of Romanian rock/metal/whatever bands (under lexicon). I trust you know what to do with the names.

I would recomend: Iris (best Romanian metal act for the past 20 years ), Phoenix (used to be the best band before Iris, still putting out great live shows), Tectonic, Ura de dupa usa, Neurotica, Negura Bunget, Implant pentru refuz (newer bands, fairly good acts). Oh, and if you can stand punk check out Zob and Terror Art. I'm not into punk myself, but Zob have some decent tunes out, and I knew a couple of the guys from Terror Art back in high school (interesting live shows).

Some of them sing in english, but I'm too tired now to dig out specific tunes. Maybe tomorrow.

Vintersorg-Try the album Cosmic Genesis. 70% of the songs are in English and deal with nature and spirituality. I would recommend the songs Astral & Arcane, Dialogue with the Stars, and The Enigmatic Spirit. He also has a band called Havayoth which is a little more Gothic influenced but very good.

Samael-Another classic new Death metal band. Baphomet's Throne is off the album Ceremony of Opposites and is probably their best to me. The album Passage is also very good, my recommendation is the song Rain. They went to a more industrial sound with Eternal and Reign of Light. Listen to The Cross and Year Zero from Eternal and Door of Celestial Peace off of Reign.

You could also try Dark Tranquillity. Co-founders of the Goteborg Death Metal sound along with In Flames(same rough vocals, but more melody to the music). All albums from Gallery thru the new album, Character, are great. The albums Projector & Haven are a little bit of an experiment and not quite as "Death Metal" as the rest. Perhaps a good start. Try the song Hedon, Lethe, or Insanity's Crescendo.

In Flames is the other great Swedish band of the same mold as DT. But only their older albums. Clayman is probably the most accessible to somebody new to the style, but my favorites are Lunar Strain, Jester Race, Whoracle, and Colony. The songs Episode 666, Moonshield, Gyroscope, and Behind Space are all awesome.

I hope you try some and enjoy. All in the name of music, the great escape!

Ura de dupa usa == hatred from behind the door. Doesn't make much sense even in Romanian.
