              I'm pretty sure that's incorrect.

In many senses, the old left-right split is meaningless. For example, libertarians from left and right traditions may find they have more in common with each other than with the more autocratically minded on their own 'sides'. They'll differ too, of course, which can be a matter of confusion and unease but understanding this is the start of moving the debate on.

On the other 'wing', the more autocratic minds of both left and right can find similar cause in using terrorism to restrict liberty - even though they're coming at it from different angles.

On the religious turf, Christian Conservatives and Islamic Fundies can find common ground regarding moral behaviour.

So, all sorts of wierd alliances are possible. The legitimacy of such alliances can be up for discussion on a case-by-case basis, but the sooner we recognise that we're dealing with multi-dimensional politics these days the better.

I get annoyed by the almost religious adherence to Marxism, as well as a stupid habit of falling for conspiracy theories, by many fellow socialists.

Eco-nuts infuriate me by introducing quasi-mystical metaphysical arguments and End-of-the-World scaremongering to what should be a scientific debate.

I am about ready to go balisitic if another post-modernist starts going around denouncing science and human reason

That's not nearly as annoying as someone who starts virtually every post with "I get annoyed..."
