This thread demonstrates why any prolonged confrontation, be it armed or diplomatic, is a problem in an open society. Too many stupid people would love nothing better than for their side to fail.

Since when is the Bush admin. "my side"? And how doe I lose if the Iraq policy collapses? The direct effects on my life will be small, thought they will be large for Iraqis themselves.

You post notes the sad need of too many people to personify with a political leadership and make basic policy disgareements mean more than they do, which weakens actual debate.

Bin Laden and Co. are right, I fear; the West is weak and doesn't have the stomach for even a slightly difficult fight. We'll probably start withdrawing in the next year or so, causing Iraq to descend into chaos and handing the terrorists their victory...

The Iraqis might welcome them at first, but very few of them want to actually live the lifestyle of the Islamists. The Shias certainly don't. Don't worry about Bin Laden. He's a putz and an eternal loser. The only thing he has going for him is that he is a superb propaganda man. Other than that he's backing a perpetually losing horse.

If the US left now I don't see it being a problem. Iraq has never had a civil war IIRC, and there's not that much reason for them to start now.

Yes, he's a moron and really should only be read for amusement. Seriously, taking Agathon's view of IR or even the internal situation is only likely to force you into a mental ward.

Iraqs neighbors will probably move in ans squash any chaos.

Of course, its hard not to leave when you have no clear reaosn why you are staying anyways.

Neoconservatism is not Liberal IR, it is a rogue offshoot.

Oh, that would be a great turn of events now, wouldn't it?

You have to be pretty dumb to not be able to see the reasons for staying in Iraq.

If what you fear is international Salafist terrorist gaining a foothold from which they can operate in Iraq as the great danger of Iraq descending into chaos, then yes, yes it is, cause the neighboring autocracies will be much more effective in killing those they dislike, and AQ is not that popular.

you have to be even dumber by thinking you can sell a long term policy simply on the boogeyman of "chaos", as in, a totally negative selling point devoid of any actual possible accomplishments.

Do you have even the slightest clue when the US would be able to declare Iraq a victory of any sorts? Care to explain how you would convince the US to stay in Iraq a decade plus?

It's "OK" to disagree... and have different opinions... and actually discuss them in a civil fashion.

Personal insults are a different matter... Keep it civil, and discuss the topic and NOT the posters... or you will find yourself restricted and not be able to post anything!

I don't follow every post in every thread... I saw YOUR post... it's that simple. So chill or be chilled.
