(More adults with children at the SDMB is one obvious example.)

        2. To answer your question, no, it would not. Sophie recognizes and is attracted to "The Incredibles." People using that specific imagery to attract children to their pet causes know exactly what they're doing - else why not come up with their own cartoons?

        3. That should read "a familiar, stolen, brand."

Please note that we named the child "Sophia", which means "wisdom" in the original Greek. This wasn't done by mistake - we wanted a common first name, not Christian, that meant something that was important to us. If we wanted to help her be susceptable to supernatural bull****, we would've called her "Mysticia" or something.

We didn't fully escape the Christian heritage in her middle name, "Caroline", which to many people refers to carols. However, we found references to old-English definitions of "Caroline" as "joyful song", which to us was perfect: Wisdom, joy, and music is the foundation of our childs name, not gullibility, backwardness, and mysticism.

I dont want my child to be drawn to christian fundamentalism either, John. Ive done my best to give her a good foundation in both Judaism AND rational thinking (which i dont consider incompatible) Whatever it is you positively believe in, give it your child - you cant, i repeat cant, keep her from temptation by driving it away. So they dont use IP, so what? They can and will, use lots of stuff thats a lot more tempting - the promise of belonging, a warm loving community, rules to live by, etc. If you want to preempt that, than find those things elsewhere.

and even then, even if you do the most a parent can do, there are no guarantees. Your daughter could end up a communist, a Pentecostal, an anarchist, a Hindu, or even a Reform Jew. You do your best in soul shaping, but at some point, as Omar Khayyam says, you release the bow, and let the arrow fly, and you accept that you cant control where it hits.

Youre at a stage where your child is AWARE, and starting to become susceptible to certain things. ANd that naturally triggers anxieties. Which i think you are taking out on this IP violation, which certainly isnt the real issue (Stealing, havent we been told at length that an IP violation isnt stealing? What if it WAS mickey mouse, which most of us agree SHOULD be public domain by now?) 1. Keep it in perspective - there are some of us who are an even smaller minority than you secularists, and we've have such fears in multiple directions, but we manage 2. You live in Tennessee dont you? I mean i know the right to live anywhere is prized and all that, but theres a certain level of reasonable expectations. I choose to live in a place with a large Jewish community (and a large RATIONALIST jewish community, i might add) If you want your kid to be a secularist, you might consider moving somewhere where there is a more supportive community for that. I mean growing up in Tennessee this is gonna be inevitable, I think.

Perhaps a bit more difficult to avoid, but by no means inevitable. Particularly in the more urban areas. While Christianity in the south has perhaps been a more driving force in society than it has in other places of the nation, it is not the all-powerful, overbearing social aspect that some people believe it to be, and perhaps also weaker than it once was.

I've lived here my entire life, and I feel that I've grown up to be pretty darned secular. Then again, maybe things are more different in the eastern parts than I believe them to be...

              Big deal.

The hospital that I work for allows it also. Here's the big shock for ya, it's run by a religion.

Um? Surely, Caroline is a derivative of Germanic karl "free man"?

Edit: A quick check confirms that that is the case.
