  • Radical new policy idea for dealing with suicide bombers

    Hold their families responsible.

Who in their right mind would sign up to be a bomber if he knew it would cause his entire family to spend the rest of their lives in jail??? Their own lives mean nothing to them, but perhaps the lives of others will.

On a practical level, seems solid.

On a moral level, I don't know yet.

EDIT: On second thought, some of these guys have already justified to themselves killing innocent people, so I'm sure they have no problem justifying their own family's misery.

These people that are filled with so much hate that they will blow themselves up to inflict pain on others had to get their ideas from somewhere. Family is the most influential group in one's life, so perhaps they are partially to blame. That should cover your moral objection

The Israelis tried this recently by knocking down the houses of suicide bombers families. Aside from it being a basic violation of innocent peoples rights and a PR disaster (and hence an incitement to further extremists), I don't believe that it proved effective in deterring suicide bombers and the practice has been discontinued (I may be wrong here though).

Just like locking up innocent people will solve the problem.

if locking up a few innocents keeps a whole lot of innocents from getting blown to pieces...i'd say it sounds utilitarian :-p

I say it sounds ridiculous. Two wrongs don't make a right, and destroying the lives of innocent people just because a member of their family strayed (which, believe it or not, may be absolutely no fault of their own!) is an absolutely terrible idea, and a shocking violation of human rights. Of course this is what it seems to be about nowadays, whirling up such a frenzy and panic that people will give away any of their basic liberties.

                      A plain ridiculous idea

Because locking random people up will surely dismay the people who already hate you enough to kill themselves in order to get to you.

I've got an even better idea - why not execute random people from their home towns, ten times the amount killed by the bombing. That'll learn em!

So you persecute some innocent people. This will lead to what? LESS people wanting to bomb places or MORE people signing up?

I bet it's more than less at the end of the day. Persecute my people and I'll bomb your azzez. With the exception of not blowing myself with it.

Kaak, do you really believe that locking up the families would reduce terrorism? The fanatics who blow themselves up would rationalize the misery of their family as a mere extra cost for the "greater good" they're serving.

                              That's the problem with fanatics.
