I tend to think that a country appraised by potential migrants is rather dynamic, and is rather promising of a good life.
The US was this beacon of migration once (and still is to a large extent). It's now Canada's turn.

Double Alberta's population to what? The same number of people who live in the city limits of Toronto? One of the most prosperous countries in the same way Luxembourg is? Just as influential too.
Canadians are odd. After five years, I still don't fully understand how they can build such a nice country and then spend all their waking time trying to tear it apart.
Exult in your existence, because that very process has blundered unwittingly on its own negation. Only a small, local negation, to be sure: only one species, and only a minority of that species; but there lies hope. [...] Stand tall, Bipedal Ape. The shark may outswim you, the cheetah outrun you, the swift outfly you, the capuchin outclimb you, the elephant outpower you, the redwood outlast you. But you have the biggest gifts of all: the gift of understanding the ruthlessly cruel process that gave us all existence [and the] gift of revulsion against its implications.

Same amount of people in the city limits of Toronto, with maybe 10x the GDP.
It's not the size that counts, it's what you do with it.

No one would miss the French, except for the French. People would be happy to see their provinces get more money with the French gone.
People would miss the extra money they got (in the form of equalization payments) when the rich province leaves and stops paying the other provinces their allowance.

But why the heck is it the province's money, and not federal money? just because you live in the same province as a bunch of oil wells doesn't mean you should somehow feel that you are paying for everybody else.

Alberta owns the oil and resources in its province, and has since 1932 with an agreement with the federal government.
The Liberal government in the early 80s tried to nationalize it, and screwed it all up in the process...causing layoffs en masse and forcing huge American oil companies out.

not the bot reply, please. Tell me why do the people of alberta deserve to enjoy the profits of oil more than everyone else in Canada, besides their duely paid wages as workers of the oil industry?

Because that's what the agreement said -- we own the resources, and therefore the profits from them.

The problem isn't Alberta, but Albertans. Kill 'em all and replace them with real people.
Why can't you be a non-conformist just like everybody else?

I was never for the seperation of Quebec from Canada, but I always hoped that if the Parti Quebecois ever pulled it off, the American Government would find some reason to dislike Quebec to a point where they need to invade us and we become an American protectorate or even a state. Anything that would eventually allow us to use the American dollar. But this was a while ago, when the American dollar was at an all time high when compared to the Canadian dollar. This was also when I thought we'd have a President like Clinton, and not Bush.
But back to the main topic. Alberta's OK, but I could live without it.
