    Bugger, that better be optional!!!!!!!

    I'm used to installation waiting
CD's can scratch and crap out
CD's are slower to load than HD's

The only good thing about this is that you save space on your computer, so, unless this is optional, it IS a step backwards!

Actually, spaces in filenames are a huge pain to deal with on the command line because spaces are used as separators in commands. A longer case-aware spaceless filename would be a welcome addition, though.

ProgramFiles is easier to deal with than both PROGRA~1 and Program Files.
I don't quite understand... The word Administrator, as in the screenshot, does not have an internal space, yet it is still abbreviated in the same way.

What concerns spaces in filenames, I don't see how they are a huge pain to deal on the command line. Several Unices do this fine, either by preceding it by a backslash, or by replacing it by %20 or another multibyte substitute, or by enclosing the whole path in quotation marks. I'm sure, that Windows can handle this fine, so why do they ten years after the death of DOS still resort to this outdated 8.3 rubbish?

On a sidenote, have you ever tried to install several Microsoft application (Microsoft Office, Microsoft Visual Studio, Microsoft Whatever... you get the picture!) and then written path descriptions and batch files referring to MICROS~1, MICROS~2, MICROS~3 etc. without getting confused which is which? That's fun I can tell ya! I did this in toy OSes like Win95 and Win98 a lot. It somehow disappoints me, that this practice is still alive.

Um... how could you make it mandatory that no game could be installed on the hard drive? It's up to the game developer to see what they want to do.

Windows XP will suit me for the next 5 - 10 years.

Longhorn will feature a task-based (or "iterative") interface that goes far beyond the task-based interface found today in Windows XP. Microsoft has been working to move beyond the dated desktop metaphor still used by most desktop operating systems
Wtf? If you look at the screenshots, they still use the desktop metaphor. In fact, its basically a better-looking version of plain vanilla Windows XP, with tweaks here and there. Not that I complaint: I don't think the GUI needs a major overhaul. It works just fine.

But that doesn't make it optional for the users, so if a game developer decides to make it console-like then it's not much we can do about
This space is empty... or is it?

As someone else mentioned, this new Longhorn looks like a Windows XP running WindowBlinds. Hey, nice icons, but so what?

I really can't see anything revolutionary here. But maybe I need to search for more information.

I hate, absolutely hate, having CDs

in fact, I would play consols more if they didn't have CDs

I would much prefer if everything went by the download approach, like with HL2 (I don't really mind that)

do I need to say again that I really really hate CDs?

I'm curious why people are expecting the Windows UI to be radically different?

                        Maybe the following claim:

Longhorn will feature a task-based (or "iterative") interface that goes far beyond the task-based interface found today in Windows XP. Microsoft has been working to move beyond the dated desktop metaphor still used by most desktop operating systems
It seems to suggest they'll do something very different.

Other reasons: people here are simply tired of it, they just want something different.

I'm happy with the current one. I think it works fine. It doesn't need to be scraped IMO. It just needs a makover. With tweaks here and there.

Most of the work has been on the innards of the OS. The current builds are a huge improvement over the builds a few months ago, and there's over a year left til release.

And I'm not sure if Paul's article regarding going beyond the dated desktop metaphor is entirely accurate.

I'm not expecting radical changes to the interface, mostly because people are used to this design and it works very well.

                            Here's a mock-up of a task-based interface for Gnome 3.0. Meh. I am... skeptical.

Well that's up to game developer to decide. It's not Microsoft's fault.

You can always store the disc image on your harddrive anyway...
