The Whistler theme was way more attractive than XP's Luna.

Whoever's in charge of graphical design at Microsoft has no taste. Take the new Windows Update thing -- too many different gradients and a mix of rounded/rectangular corners. End result horrible.

How exactly is Whistler's theme more attractive than what resulted on XP?

Whistler doesn't look like Fischer-Price (Luna).

On the other hand, this Interim Longhorn is better than both. I like the glass borders.

I have a couple of simple questions - I am a casual WinXP Home user.

CD-Rs - when can we finally use them instead of floppies - I want to be able to goddamn drag a file to a CD without any problems.

I want networking to be as easy and as secure as a counting to 3.

I want the OS to use as little resources as possible - it seems that OSes are resource hogs and sometimes, the mind boggles.

I want costumizability in anything and everything.

I wouldn't mind the death of that small filename problem Sir Ralph was alluding to.

I want it to have lots of features and prepackaged programs, and want them to be streamlined and sharp, and not to crash.

I want to have all maintenance to be done for me - like virus scans, and other stuff - in the background, very slowly while I am surfing the net, and not using the resources of my computer.

Apart from 2 and 3, buy a mac. Don't waste your time with Microsoft's crapware. That is, unless you plan to do no important work on your computer.

I can already use CD-RW as floppies in Windows. You can't use CD-Rs are floppies cause, well, CD-Rs are write-once.

You want a completely customizable OS with "lots of features and prepackaged programs", yet one that uses little resources. I suppose you also want a 500 hp car with 1000 mpg?

You also want virus scans and "other stuff" in the background, without using computer resources. Would you also like your computer to have sex with you, because that's just as possible.

Don't know why Aggie suggested a Mac based on the above mentioned tasks, one would think that OS X would be the last thing that you'd want if you want an efficient OS.

                  1. CD-Rs - when can we finally use them instead of floppies - I want to be able to goddamn drag a file to a CD without any problems.
Already present in Win XP, I'm not quite sure what you mean. Explorer has burn capability.

                  2. I want networking to be as easy and as secure as a counting to 3.
I've never had more trouble with Win XP than I have with OS X in this area.

                  3. I want the OS to use as little resources as possible - it seems that OSes are resource hogs and sometimes, the mind boggles.
I find that both Windows and OS X are bloated compared to my elegant and simple Gentoo box. That said, I run most things on my Windows box, simply because it's faster and uses less resources--I've shut off most services.

                  4. I want costumizability in anything and everything.
I find customization of Windows easier than that in OS X.

                  5. I wouldn't mind the death of that small filename problem Sir Ralph was alluding to.
This is probably the only valid point Ag has thus far.

                  6. I want it to have lots of features and prepackaged programs, and want them to be streamlined and sharp, and not to crash.
If Microsoft did this, you'd be hearing so many people ***** about how anti-competitive it was.

When I drag an icon to the CD, it gives me some sort of bull**** "insert media" error. I use a burner, and it goes on just fine.

I am not comparing to a Mac here. I am comparing to plugging the headphones.

I don't mind features, it's though it seems that often these features are resource hogs, and often it seems that this is unecessary.

In that case, I don't have a reply. Mostly because I don't use CDRWs anymore.

Actually, Windows XP does do constant defragging in the background if you choose to let it. The reason Virusscans and most other things don't happen is because they're not built-into the OS.

If they were, you'd have people *****ing about how anti-competitive it is.

And it seems that in Longhorn, we won't have to install games anymore. Just like consoles.

Lester went on to explain other features that Microsoft's Games for Windows group wishes to improve on or simply wants streamline out of existence. One example was the conventional game installation system that requires users to sit through several lengthy loading screens. Lester stated flatly, "We need to make that go away." Ideally, Microsoft would like to make PC game installation as easy as the plug-and-play experience of console games, which can be played the instant a disc is dropped into a drive. Lester also outlined a more-streamlined display-driver model that would alleviate confusion with different graphics driver versions. This would be especially helpful in situations where certain versions of some drivers would work better with some games than others, depending on the hardware.

The best thing about PC games was that you could play it w/o needing the disc in the drive every time.

Yeah, but MS can't, because those people will go after the OS, especially in the US and Europe.
