If you're looking at genetic tinkering, not necessarily if you put into place and enforce strict limitations into what can and cannot be modified. Don't like the gender of your baby? Too f*cking bad. Want a white baby instead of a black one? Adopt. Want a curly blond instead of long brown hair? Hair straighteners and dyes, aisle 5. Worried about the prospects of Little Jonnie becoming the next Liberace or Betty Sue become a militant butch lesbian? Hate the sin, love the sinner, or just deal with your own sexual insecurities. Want your child to have excellent mental or athletic abilities? Public education is "free", spending time with your child is benefitial for the whole family, and God knows there's umpteen billion ways to make exercise fun and enjoyable.

Though as far as dyes and stuff, I'd get the kid's consent after a certain age.

I think in this case, it is the stupidity that effected even the most jaded of us. That is, if she's telling the truth, but I think I smell a rat.

This is bizarre. She admits that she knew the dog was a threat, she should have locked up the dog, not the kid. Was she perhaps too scared of the dogs to attempt to lock them up? She had two other kids. Where were they?

I recall reading some where that most fatal maulings are caused by 2-3 breeds of dog. If that is true then outlawing those breeds should eliminate most deaths caused by dog maulings.

Nonsense. Pit bulls are easily some of the most patient and loving dogs around children, if they've been socialized properly. (Yes, there is individual personality at play but it's rarely that bad by nature.)

Any improperly raised dog can be just as bad as the pit bulls and rotties. You can stomp on a chihuahua and kill the little shyte if it bites you. Can't do that to the bigger breeds.

Mother of mauling victim arrested

The mother of 12-year-old San Francisco boy killed by the family’s two pit bulls earlier this month was arrested today on a warrant charging her with felony child endangerment causing death.

The charges against Maureen Faibish, 39, could lead to a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison if she is convicted. Eileen Hirst of the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department confirmed that Faibish had been booked into the county jail and was being held on $75,000 bail.

Faibish, reached before her arrest today, said simply: “I know I didn’t do anything wrong.’’ She said her concerns were for the 8-year-old Santa Rosa girl attacked and mauled by a neighbor’s pit bull Wednesday. The animal also attacked the girl’s mother.

“I give my sympathies to that poor family in Santa Rosa, that mother and child,’’ Faibish said. “Our family is praying for that family and hopes for their full recovery.’’

Faibish left her son, Nicholas, alone in the family’s home on Lincoln Way in the Sunset District when she went to run errands June 3. One of the family’s two pit bulls had bitten the boy earlier that day, investigators believe. The father was out of state in Oregon at the time of the attack.

Police shot and killed the family’s female dog, Ella, when they responded to neighbors’ 911 calls. The other pit bull, Rex, has been confiscated by the city’s Animal Care and Control agency.

Nicholas’ death prompted moves by local and state officials to crack down on aggressive canines and their owners. Mayor Gavin Newsom has said he intends to stiffen fines for not licensing dogs, ban “backyard breeding” operations and require owners of certain breeds to obtain liability insurance.

Maureen Faibish told The Chronicle in an interview the day after the attack that she had left Nicholas in the basement, given him snacks and video games and propped a shovel against the door to keep the pit bulls from getting in.

She said she had been worried about the male dog, Rex, because he had been acting possessively toward the other pit bull, Ella, who was in heat.

“I told him (Nicholas): ‘Stay down there until I come back,’.” she said in the interview. "Typical Nicky, he wouldn’t listen to me.”

She found the boy’s body in a bedroom upon her return. Maureen Faibish has insisted her dogs were not violent before the attack and got on well with her three children.

“It’s Nicky’s time to go,” she said the day after the boy died. “When you’re born, you’re destined to go, and this was his time.”
