Call To Power 2 Cradle 3+ mod in progress: https://apolyton.net/forum/other-games/call-to-power-2/ctp2-creation/9437883-making-cradle-3-fully-compatible-with-the-apolyton-edition
The one I can think of off hand would be The Tragedy of Great Power Politics by John Mearsheimer. Specifically the last chapter where he discusses the pacifier role America has played in Europe on the probable future of the American pacifier.

For those who aspire to live in a high cost, high tax, big government place, our nation and the world offers plenty of options. Vermont, Canada and Venezuela all offer you the opportunity to live in the socialist, big government paradise you long for. –Senator Rubio
Yeah, but we're not hurting for paying the cost. Not only does it not hurt us to cover Europe, but it keeps all the power in our own hands, which is better than risking and letting foreigners have some.
I hardly think letting Europeans have some more power over their own defense would do us any harm and reduced government spending would help our economy grow over the long run, helping us support the military we have. Besides, it will match the benefit of European defense with the taxes European taxpayers pay.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

I'll give it a try.

I will tell you that the man does take a more realist bent than I've seen you do on these boards. Just FYI.

Yes, I've become a little disillusioned with strictly realist foreign policy post 9/11. Thanks for the heads up.

Well if you pick it up from a library or what not, I'd love to hear your thoughts on it.

Europe's military budgets are perfectly adequate. The idea that it doesn't 'take responsibility' for its own defence is silly - who is there to defend against?

You're not the only one.
Anyway, to address the topic, I'd much rather see Japan increase its military spending than Europe. Europe's days as the center of world events is long gone, while odds are good that the next century will be an Asian one. A reliable, militarily strong ally in the thick of world events is much better for the US than a fickle union of formerly influential states with the military strength needed to back up their delusions of grandeur. IMO, at least...
KH FOR OWNER! ASHER FOR CEO!! GUYNEMER FOR OT MOD!!!
I find it hard to think of any European country these days with a significant demand for border revision or martial revenge. Can you?
Why can't you be a non-conformist just like everybody else?
