      • I would like to go to bed, but this is actually amusing to watch a drawn-out argument over something so trivial.

Yeah, I'm curious to see how long this can go on despite the fact that a vicious pwning has already been meted out...

And who wouldn't know one is talking about ESB when you say that? Duh...

To claim that people don't know what you are talking about when you say Episode IV of Star Wars shows extreme ignorance. Most people know the prequals by Episode number. Episode 1 and Episode 2 is how they are mostly referred to.

Most people know this Boris. People who had no idea what Episode 4 of Star Wars was, I'd be concerned that they had been living in a cave since the 70s.
I can only say you're utterly making this up. Nobody except complete geeks would refer to the movies by their number. The overwhelming majority refer to them by their theatrical release names. I grew up with everyone knowing damn well the difference between "Star Wars," "Empire," and "Jedi."

In fact, I bet if you asked most people what they thought "Episode I" was of Star Wars, they'd say the 1977 film.

                • Now we have to bring in visual evidence for this petty argument.

                  • So even in the 1990s special edition release, it was just labelled "Star Wars." Neither "Episode 4" nor "A New Hope" appears on the box.

OH NOES! THE PEOPLE MUST HAVE BEEN SO CONFUSED!!!!

I think you're a little deluded as to who pwned who in this case...

Anyway, here's the revised correctness scale:

Imran >> Boris >>>>>>> John T > Jaguar and Oerdin

                      • Two people have brought evidence into this argument.

Others have brought only memories, which one of those people, given his legal training, should know is as unreliable as a mother****.

And the rest are enjoying this train-wreck of a thread.

                        • He had to officially change the names so he could legally refer to the first film as "Episode 4: A New Hope" in, you know, legal documents. Like merchandising agreements, profit-sharing documents, and a whole host of other issues.

He insisted that any future mention of SW by his company and those who wanted to deal with them go by their new name. He also has the power to grant access to more... compliant... newspeople, one of the conditions was, I'm sure, to get the new nomenclature right. That's how he got the "message" out - through good old fashion arm-twisting leading to "proper" (in his eyes) media exposure.

And... this magically changed what people called the movies because? What, you really think everyone is that much of sheep and was beguiled by a few toys and newspaper articles? Are you serious?

One of reasons to change it was that people were already referring to it as Episode 4, if not "A New Hope". Like I said, quite confusing to refer to the entire series as Star Wars and reserve that name for one movie as well. It needs something else to set it apart.

So what you are saying is that John was totally incorrect that Lucas twisted the arms of everyone and anyone to call it "Episode 4 - A New Hope"?
