              @ Zulu Elephant : -

I'd say that you go with DevCPP if you want a nice IDE for C/C++/all other GCC supported languages , along with the whole of MINGW , all of this put together in a simple installer .

              Here's the website : http://www.bloodshed.net/devcpp.html

              Enjoy .

I've used the Bloodshed compiler, it's easy to use and most importantly very easy to setup - you can be coding in 10 mins.

Zulu, why not go for Python? You could even use it for Civ4.

All thats a bit over the top, it sounds to me like Zulu just wants a bit of mental exercise and to see whether he's still intested in knocking up a few programs in his spare time.
                    Exactly.

Seems to be a consensus that, as long as Im not about to start creating AI for Terminators, Java's probably the way forward the way forward.

So, anymore thoughts? Should i get Jbuilder or what?

Probably the most useful thing ever invented. I don't know how to program Windows-BAT files, but I know BASH and with the GNU commandline utilities you can do almost everything.

The only thing that I hate is the syntax and I've torn several hairs out to get some things right.
                      VAR=$VAR+1 works that way: VAR=$(($VAR+1))

Anyway I just did one in about one minute that saved me probably 2 hours time of ridiculous work.

Ofc for me, all that would be impossible without Cygwin!
                      Bash

So that's dealing with the SDK with command line and possibly netbeans (a lot of people use JBuilder, but I had a hell of a time trying to add the JDBC driver of mySQL to it).

Developing on the command line in Windows is intolerable because of 8.3.

yeah, get JBuilder (the older versions are really cheap and probably have all you'll need to start with) and a good book on java.

If I were you i'd give up on this thread, the geeks have taken over and are engaged in a bout of nerdy one-up-manship.

No ones been taking any notice of you since the middle of page 1

                              Isn't Jbuilder free anymore??

Be warned that it is an awfull IDE though.

There's nothing better than having a beer and watch your set of shell scripts do all the work for you. Cheers!
