There's something called work-study. You get an education and work experience to pad your CV with.

Yeah, the bright people among us do that (it's called cooperative education here).

You even get to network with the major players.

Let's be honest: someone who spent 16 months with IBM is going to get the job over someone who spent 16 months volunteering for the York Region Homeless Shelter, converting their DOS machines to Linux...

On the contrary. Practically nobody had Linux or website design experience.

Interning also does wonders for technical and non-technical types. When I interned on Capitol Hill my boss started out as a 27 year-old intern and got hired. I started as an intern at my firm and now I'm going to be some sort of junior lobbyist/researcher after only two months. Sometimes giving away your time can help advance your career.

                      Boris,

Do people REALLY send you resumes from diploma mills?

Actually, that was a rhetorical question, tell us more about them.

                        Wow. Asher's nerdschlong is HUGE.

Too bad he uses BlueGene/L for porn.

Well, I think both Urban Ranger and Asher have valid points, they aren't mutually exclusive to each other.

I've gotten alot of experience through both volunteer work AND doing an internship. In fact, the volunteer work helped me get the internship, and I could have gotten a job at the place where I interned.

I often wonder what life would have been like had I picked that fork in the road.

Yes because as someone with no experience applying for a job our primary concern is making YOU happy you pretencious *explitive* not suceeding on our quest for enjoyment.

Finding an internship is near impossible if you won't work on saturdays i've found.

                              Dear evil HR person:

Remember the horribly low-paid position that I applied for because I was desperate at the time?

Well, I have attained a much better position now, so you can take that open position you have, and shove it up your ***.

                              Respectfully not yours,
