  • Hell, there's a couple of doofus's at the Straight Dope who are arguing that Bush's words mean nothing because he's not bothering to explain what he would've done in FDR's place.

Individual good things might happen, but the reality of the situation is that no one is in control, even in Baghdad. In daylight, it's controlled by US troops, at night? By no one.
As long as there is fighting, it's not OK. As long as there can be over 50 Iraqis dead a day, it's definitely not OK.
Actually, Pekka, the Sunni/al Qa'ida is weakening in the Sunni triangle as more and more people turn against them. Most of the country is just fine, thank you. Peaceful and prosperous beyond all measure from Saddam's time. They have an elected government, etc., etc., etc.

What happened the Saddam, the elections and Bush's inaugural speech have had ramifacations all through the ME. The people of Lebanon cast off the Syrian and will soon be voting. The Palestinians elected an new president dedicated to peace. The Egyptians are holding their first presidential elections in decades. The Saudi's are holding municipal elections for the first time.

Syria remains the most prominent holdout for the old order. How long they can stand against freedom is anyone's guess.

The tide has turned. It is due to one man. Guess his name?

You know we sent troops into disputed territory first, right?

The U.S. government claimed that the southern border of Texas was the Rio Grande; Mexico maintained it to be the Nueces River. President James K. Polk ordered General Zachary Taylor to place troops between the two rivers. Taylor crossed the Nueces, ignoring Mexican demands that he withdraw, and marched south to the Rio Grande where he began to build Fort Brown. Fighting began on April 24, 1846 when Mexican cavalry captured one of the American detachments near the Rio Grande. After the border clash and battles at Palo Alto and Resaca de la Palma, Polk sent to Congress declaring that the Mexicans had "invaded our territory and shed American blood upon American soil".

                            • I seem to recall that a young upstart congressman called Abraham Lincoln challenged Polk to state where the supposed attack on US forces on US soil had occurred.

                              Polk never said.

                                Heh. Thought not.
