Auto-save is time-based, pressing Ctrl-S is content-based. Sometimes I only write one sentence in an hour, in which case auto-saves would be wasted effort then. Sometimes I can type a full page in the space of about 5 minutes. I would be seriously f*cked if I relied on an hourly auto-safe feature and after typing 10 pages at that pace my PC would crash...
