The WTO has the power we vest in it. Bush could have told the WTO off and threatened to retaliate against tariffs placed in response to our anti-dumping measures, and we would have won that fight, the Europeans would have either backed down, or learned a very,very painful lesson.

A trade war is bad for all the parties concerned. Besides the so called anti-dumping measures are just excuses of protectionism.

I am waiting for a refutation of my point. And it isn't a cold war mentality, it goes all the way back throughout the sum total of all of human history.

My point is that there are more then a few in the united states who would worship at the altar of the WTO. Their word is effectively law.

A trade war is bad for all the parties concerned.

Which is why the side that stands to lose a hell of a lot more has a good reason to back down,especially for the people who were absolutely not effected by those anti-dumping measures who piled onto the suit.

Your view of trade wars remind me of NYE's view on nuclear wars: "you have only a few hundreds of nukes while we have THOUSANDS! Bring it on!".
Countries initiate war only when they believe they stand more to gain than to lose. They rarely care about what the others lose, only on what they lose themselves. If a commercial war had meant a grave economic crisis in the US, and a much worse end result than settling the issue, then the US leadership has been wise to avoid it.
