France lacks long term vision in its foreign policy. They have been opportunistic short timers for quite some time. Sooner or later, it will bite them, but probably not until the current crop of politicians has retired to their villas in Provence.

You have to understand that Agathon doesn't really care about anything else but giving the figurative finger to the US because he feels so marginalized by US cultural and political dominance.“It is no use trying to 'see through' first principles. As amply demonstrated by France ignoring said dominance with no effect.
The US has been threatening other western nations for years. None of us really listen. But I thought you knew that.Only feebs vote.

You can criticize France for international ADD all you want, this critic doesn't hold true at all in Europe (and in Africa). The main reason why the EU is so integrated today is because France and Germany have made consistent sacrifices for long term benefits. The Beneluxians are more dedicated, but if they had been at the helm of the EU from the beginning, today's EU would be the Beneluxian Superstate and nothing more."I have been reading up on the universe and have come to the conclusion that the universe is a good thing." -- Dissident

Up until those new Eastern members, it was the franco prussian superstate and nothing more......“It is no use trying to 'see through' first principles. Actually, I have nothing against France or its foreign policy. In fact, I find them quite predictable. You can get what you want as long as you are willing to deal. Bush just isn't a good deal maker.“It is no use trying to 'see through' first principles. If you see through everything, then everything is transparent. Not really. You just don't live in the real world. Only the Americans really care about Taiwan, and among western nations only the Americans really have a bee in their bonnet about China (wth the possible exception of Australia).
Most of the rest of us think that the Taiwan China issue will sort itself out, since the Taiwanese are busy invading China rather than the other way around. I can't remember what the level of investment is and how many Taiwanese now live and work in Shanghai, but it's a lot.
China is an emerging power and we all better get used to it. There's nothing we can do other than try to maintain cordial relations with the Chinese. In fact of all the potential superpowers I worry about the Chinese the least. They have a couple of gripes, but historically China has not been an expansionist power.Only feebs vote.
