Ratzinger later expanded this idea by publicly stating politicians who don't follow church doctrine (on things like birth control & abortion) could be excommunicated.

I have no idea whether he said this exactly, but it is about time, IMHO.

That's a Guardian article on Ratzinger's role in covering up Church Sex Abuse cases. Pretty damning stuff really.

Ratzinger is also the author of a May 2001 letter to bishops stating that the “Crimine solicitationies” law (regarding strict secrecy in sex abuse cases) is still in effect.
The 69-page Latin document bearing the seal of Pope John XXIII was sent to every bishop in the world. The instructions outline a policy of ’strictest’ secrecy in dealing with allegations of sexual abuse and threatens those who speak out with excommunication.

They also call for the victim to take an oath of secrecy at the time of making a complaint to Church officials. It states that the instructions are to ‘be diligently stored in the secret archives of the Curia [Vatican] as strictly confidential. Nor is it to be published nor added to with any commentaries.’

[…] Bishops are instructed to pursue these cases ‘in the most secretive way… restrained by a perpetual silence… and everyone… is to observe the strictest secret which is commonly regarded as a secret of the Holy Office… under the penalty of excommunication’.
Ratzinger claimed that informing the media or even informing the police about Sex Abuses commited by Roman Catholic Priests was an excommunicatable offense.

          • Wow, the defamation coming out of the British press is so hostile that I wonder if the German government ought to file a letter of protest?

            • A trusted ally of Pope John Paul II has been accused of a string of sexual abuse at a key training ground for the Catholic Church.

ABC News article from April 2004 about how then Cardinal Ratzinger was personally covering up sex abuse cases and shuffling pedophile priests around to different locations in order to prevent police arresting them for sexually abusing children.

The accusers say Vatican-based Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, who heads the Vatican office to safeguard the faith and the morals of the church, quietly made the lawsuit go away and shelved it. There was no investigation and the accusers weren't asked a single question or asked for a statement.

He was appointed by the pope to investigate the entire sex abuse scandal in the church in recent days. But when approached by ABCNEWS in Rome last week with questions of allegations against Maciel, Ratzinger became visibly upset and actually slapped this reporter's hand.

"Come to me when the moment is given," Ratzinger told ABCNEWS, "not yet."

"Cardinal Ratzinger is sheltering Maciel, protecting him," said Berry, who expressed concerns that no response was being given to the allegations against the man charged with sex abuse. "These men knelt and kissed the ring of Cardinal Ratzinger when they filed the case in Rome. And a year-and-a-half later, he takes those accusations and aborts them, just stuffs them."

You don't find it unethical that Ratzinger personally was the man who shuffled pedophile priests from location to location in order to prevent them from being arrested for sexually abusing children? How about how this man wrote an official memo telling the faithful that they would be excommunicated if they told police about priests who sexually abused children?

Those sound like the actions of a monster not a Pope.

The more intolerate the Catholic Church becomes the more people will tell it to **** off. If the Church wants to play in politics then it can but don't cry when your nonprofit status is revoked.

I would find such a thing unnacceptable. However, I hardly think such a man would be elected Pope. There has to be something "lost in the translation."
