  • From Gamespy:
We checked out the final mainboard of the 360, complete with a water-cooled CPU, GPU, and memory modules installed.
    Watercooling!

    So it's quiet! :d

    • Along with seeing the final CPU, GPU, TV encoder, and Southbridge chips in the flesh, we were told how the CPU's three cores are capable of running at a whopping 3.2 GHz each -- each core supporting two threads making for a total of six threads running at any one time. The CPU is a custom-built IBM PowerPC-based chip. The GPU is also a powerhouse, and Holmdahl seemed confident that the graphical grunt of the 360 is around twice as powerful as the most powerful PC chipset architecture currently in circulation. With a clock speed of 500 MHz, the GPU (designed by ATI) is able to support up to 48 different pixel shaders (advanced shader language) at any one time, something which will allow developers and artists to use some truly gorgeous rendering and special effects in their games.

The CPU and GPU are linked together by a blisteringly fast data bus which can transfer operations at an incredible 5.4 Gb per second. Couple this together with the TV encoder chip (responsible for the various high-definition output modes that connect to HD-compatible displays) and the Southbridge chip which deals with a variety of functions like audio, and the core of the 360 shapes up to be incredibly efficient and extremely powerful. The bottom line? Games for the Xbox 360 have the potential to be very, very special. After all, the overall system floating-point performance of the machine is an astounding 1 TFLOP!
48 pixel shading programs at one time! So those "absurd" rumours of 48 independent ALUs on the graphics chip are not so absurd after all.

      • Another look at the beast. Btw, if you don't like the white, you can change the faceplate. There should be a good choice of faceplates.

        • The harddrive is detachable, removable, and upgradable.

That's especially cool, actually. It's that much easier to bring saved games/music soundtracks/etc to a friends house.

          • Hopefully they offer different colors for the controller .

I hear that the "X" on the controller is also a button for XBox Live, IIRC.

It controls menus on the system, including Xbox Live.

You can also use it to turn on/off the system from the controller somehow.

Aw sweet... that's one thing I kind of wanted (though thought it'd be too silly for anyone to impliment)... turning the system off without going up and physically doing it

                  • Thanks for the link, nostromo. It seems you can connect the controller to the system with USB, so if you are low on battery, you can use it as a corded controller. Good idea.

                    • Btw, I'll also say I like the Silver/Gold for XBox Live. Since I probably won't be a Gold member, it's good to know I can download patches for games and stuff like that . WTG, Microsoft!

                        • I wonder what they mean by Wi-fi ready. Does it mean that I don't need to buy a wireless network card for the 360, that I only need to buy a wireless router?

                          • The videos I've seen show it as having an antenna, I think what it means is you need the infrastructure (like a router).

                            • According to Gamespot:

The rear of the system has a third USB 2.0 port, an Ethernet port, and a slot for a small, gum-packet-sized Wi-Fi adapter. At this time, the wireless adapter will be sold separately.
And it seems that a 20 GB hard disk will be come standard after all...

                              • The HD is standard?

Is there still going to be two variations at launch then?
