I don't know. That's why I put "alleged" in the sentence, because they haven't been convicted — and may not be — by a jury of their peers.

Perhaps someone has access to a database regarding the repeat offense percentage in the world pedophile population? Those are the folks who would make ideal candidates for the proposal put forward by Seeker.

When I was young it was called childhood - and its a shame that today kids are kept under lock and key because of a few tragic incidents.

Tonight, a South Dakota girl vanished. Eight years old. They found her body a few hours ago — raped, then killed, allegedly by a 41-year-old white man. Her grandmother's boyfriend.

I've had it. From now on, screw "rehabilitating" pedophiles. It's time they were locked up in solitary confinement and never released back into society. They're the worst re-offenders I've ever seen. Pedophiles are an ABOMINATION if there ever was one. It's time to put a tracking chip under their skin and ship them off to permanent confinement.

I've got a special place for them: Put a high-security supermax prison deep in the Arctic, make it so each cell is windowless (or looks out only onto an icy, snowy windswept ice sheet) and designed for solitary confinement. Assign a skeleton staff to the facility at double or triple pay. Stock the area with polar bears. And let it be known that if an inmate escapes, s/he is simply left to die on the ice, or becomes bear meat.

I consider myself a moderate ... but, by God, pedophiles bring out the worst in me. We all harbor darkness, we all have triggers that can bring it to the surface. Pedophiles are my trigger. I find it *damn* hard to have an iota of sympathy for the men and women — and I use that term loosely — who prey upon the most helpless members of our societies.

Oh, from your jump directly from your anecdote to the failures of rehabilitation on such animals, I assumed that these were repeat offenders. I'm not sure what your plan would be to ferret out pedophiles before they victimize someone...

recidivism rates for sex offenders is in actuality much lower than "regular" criminals. Much of that is probably due to the relative severity in sentences, ie, your common car thief is on average going to spend much less time in the clink than a sex offender.

            from the doj:

            Sex offenders

On a given day in 1994 there were approximately 234,000 offenders convicted of rape or sexual assault under the care, custody, or control of corrections agencies; nearly 60% of these sex offenders are under conditional supervision in the community.

The median age of the victims of imprisoned sexual assaulters was less than 13 years old; the median age of rape victims was about 22 years.

An estimated 24% of those serving time for rape and 19% of those serving time for sexual assault had been on probation or parole at the time of the offense for which they were in State prison in 1991.
Of the 9,691 male sex offenders released from prisons in 15 States in 1994, 5.3% were rearrested for a new sex crime within 3 years of release.
Of released sex offenders who allegedly committed another sex crime, 40% perpetrated the new offense within a year or less from their prison discharge.

            Child victimizers

Approximately 4,300 child molesters were released from prisons in 15 States in 1994. An estimated 3.3% of these 4,300 were rearrested for another sex crime against a child within 3 years of release from prison.
Among child molesters released from prison in 1994, 60% had been in prison for molesting a child 13 years old or younger.
Offenders who had victimized a child were on average 5 years older than the violent offenders who had committed their crimes against adults. Nearly 25% of child victimizers were age 40 or older, but about 10% of the inmates with adult victims fell in that age range.
Compare this to the general criminal recidivism rates:

            Recidivism
Of the 272,111 persons released from prisons in 15 States in 1994, an estimated 67.5% were rearrested for a felony or serious misdemeanor within 3 years, 46.9% were reconvicted, and 25.4% resentenced to prison for a new crime.
The 272,111 offenders discharged in 1994 accounted for nearly 4,877,000 arrest charges over their recorded careers.
Within 3 years of release, 2.5% of released rapists were rearrested for another rape, and 1.2% of those who had served time for homicide were arrested for a new homicide.
Sex offenders were less likely than non-sex offenders to be rearrested for any offense –– 43 percent of sex offenders versus 68 percent of non-sex offenders.
Sex offenders were about four times more likely than non-sex offenders to be arrested for another sex crime after their discharge from prison –– 5.3 percent of sex offenders versus 1.3 percent of non-sex offenders.

Yeah, 99% of the case you hear about are white men anyway.

White is default, you only have to say race if they are a different color.

so you see, the problem isn't that rehabilitation is a failure, its figuring out which 3.3 out of a hundred are going to be continual threats to the community. The best way to do that is to have a vigilant police force who actually enforces sex offender registries and parole officers that actually do their jobs. A rarity. I disagree with vigilante witchburners who interfere with a criminal who has served his time, reestablishing himself elsewhere and becoming gainfully employed in a non-child threatening career.

Maybe a more graphic rendition of Little Red Riding Hood could be used to educate kids?

are you saying they should stay at home all the time?

When I was a kid, I went everywhere without parental or adult supervision.

We shouldn't have to live in a society where we have to be under a adult guard all the time and stay locked in our homes.

Kids should go out and play and get excersize.

Actually the only reason I never had to worry about being raped when I was a kid, was I was an ugly kid. . Being ugly has its advantages.

if kids were allowed to carry guns, these things wouldn't be a problem.

I was a a kid in the early 80's in an area of Utah that had a rash of kidnapping/killings of children. Like 4 in a 6 month period.

I was actually interviewed by Real People about all the kidnappings.

They were done by different people. I still remember Rachel Runyon's name 25 years later.

                        Her killer was never caught.

We had child molesters in my youth. Everybody knew if you went jogging with Brother Roberts in the National Park he was going to chase you

People didn't freak out about it then. I don't know why they do now.

we were more practical in those days

anyone who went jogging with Brother Roberts probably risked getting molested and then the boy got bashed or razzed by the other kids at school for being such an idiot

Boys who regularly went jogging were the subject of deep suspicion for *** tendencies and got teased about that. Some of them probably were gay.

We worked it out, we coped, we didn't form a lynch mob
