you can only bury the dead, but you have to spend a bit more time on the still living. You know, arrest-trial-sentencing etc? Leads to recency/primacy for the accused to others other than the direct acquaintences of the victim.

I posted statistics for recidivism rates in sex offenders. Do you have something that would indicate they are incorrect? Or are they inapplicable in your opinion, ie, your statement is referring to those who are eternally incarcerated?

They're inapplicable as far as my opinions on the DP. Hopefully these people would be imprisoned for life anyway. I think it's a waste of resources to keep them alive.

I really doubt this, but your referrence to "rejected males" may have some relevance. If you look at the statistics posted by asleepatthewheel you find that pedophiles tend to be considerably older than other sex offenders. Perhaps pedophiles are older people who have given up on relations with adults and are attracted in children because of the child's comparative helplessness.

[Hair was a handy protection for children, but became a liability for fighting adult males - except those who developed the beneficial baldness mutation, which was too slow to become widespread, because humans developed the intelligence to cut hair].

Anyway, I question if paedophiles are truly mentally ill. Of course such behaviour is anti-social, but in the jungle, anything goes for the sake of survival.

I really doubt this. Humans are less hairy than most other land mammals. It's felt that our lack of body hair is an adaptation that helps keep our brain cool. We retain hair on the head however as insulation.

Another problem - and by the way this IMHO, the Psychologists in my wife's doctoral program would probably have a s**t fit if they read this - is that we no longer distinguish between pedophilia and statutory rape. This is an example of cheapening the crime, i.e. the extremes some militant feminists go in defining rape ("he told you he would break up if you didn't have sex" is rape to them - I kid you not).

Statutory rape, i.e. having sex with a willing adolescent is not what I consider pedophilia. It is wrong, but it is an immature and stupid crime, i.e. knowing you are having sex with a person who is not legally responsible, but who is very willing. IMHO most of the men, and occasional women, who do this and get caught realize - that piece of a** simply was not worth 2-5 years in prison. Even if they never get the fact it is wrong, they understand the punishment.

A pedophile is an entirely different beast. They are excited by prepubescent children, i.e. children without any secondary sexual characteristics. There is something profoundly wrong in them, and the cause is moot. The sex drive is one of the most fundamental drives in man, and is they would start to do some serious research into it I suspect they could start to seperate out that 3.3% that is dangerous, most of which I will bet come from the group I am calling true pedophiles.

It reminds me of a test a radio host came up with, if the idea of watching two men get it on makes a guy go "ewww" then he isn't gay - which is also why it is not voluntary IMHO. For every poster here, I also would bet the idea of watching an adult have sex with a prepubescent child is revolting. For those who are only excited by that - I find it very sad but they must be locked up, I like that Canadian system.

Here's the thing. I don't recall ever seeing a child molester on the electric chair. It's always a murderer.
