    This thread took wrong turn...
The cake is NOT a lie. It's so delicious and moist.

      Starchild's favourite UK sandwich fillings:

      Chicken Tikka
      Coronation Chicken
      Cheese and Tomato
      Cheese and Branston Pickle
      Cheese and Mango Chutney
Ploughman's (just add lettuce and tomato to the Cheese and pickle one above)
      Cheese and Onion (da bomb!)

I notice the abundance of cheese on my list. That's because cheese is amazing.

          Roast vegetables and cream cheese

                White bread
                Mayo
                Cheddar cheese
                Cucumber slices
                Tomato slices
                Onion slices
                Ham
More Cheddar cheese (I like the stuff)
More onion slices (I also like them)
                More Mayo (I like etc.)
                White bread

And if you can get your mouth around that one, you deserve one more, just for good measure.

I have the pregnant wife who gets hungry at strange times, so I too have a fridge full of sandwhich stuffs so that something can be whipped together on a moments notice.

                  RIght now we have:

                  Chicken Salad
                  Egg Salad
                  Peanut Butter
                  Jelly
                  Mayo
                  Mustard
Lettuce (if you think it will rot before you use it get rid of it)
                  Honey
                  Pickles
                  Sprouts (good lettuce substitute)
                  Roast Beef
                  Pastrami
                  Swiss Cheese
                  American Cheese
                  Tomatoes

Chicken Salad: 2 Cups Chopped Cooked CHicken (I boiled it, but you can probably get it already cooked), 1 cup diced red peppers, 1 cup diced celery, 1 cup mayo, 1/3 cup relish... mix together, keeps forever.

Egg Salad is just hard boiled eggs, mayo, and relish

What she ussually eats: Grilled CHeese, Roast Beef and swiss, PEanut Butter and JElly or PB and Honey, and I eat that pastrami

Easy and keeps; tinned corned beef and mustard.

My favourite is bacon, peanut butter and vegemite/marmite, but it's not really for long term storage... maybe dried ham instead of the bacon?

Wasn't Mao the first deity in here, spamming like there'd be no tomorrow in 1999?

                          On-topic:
Basic sandwich ingredients are bread (try to get ones which are made of whole grains), cheese, tomatoes, salad and cucumber. You can add more stuff depending on your own taste (ham slices, turkey, tuna, mayonese, whatever).

Eggs will be a bad idea if you're intending to store them for > week.

If you want relatively little cooking, try the Italian mozzarella in carozza (one version here) :

                            '
                            Yield: 6 Servings

                            12 White bread slices
                            6 sl Mozzarella cheese
                            1 c Milk; (approximately)
                            Flour; for dredging
                            2 Eggs; lightly beaten
                            ½ c Olive oil
                            2 tb Butter
                            1 sm Garlic clove; crushed
                            2 oz Anchovies; minced
                            1 tb Lemon juice; optional

Trim the crusts of the bread. Cut the cheese into pieces slightly smaller than the bread. Place the cheese on 6 slices of the bread. There should be a margin of no more than 1/8”.

Cover with the remaining 6 slices of bread and dip the sandwiches into the milk, dredge them with flour and coat them with beaten egg. Heat the oil in a heavy skillet over medium-high heat.

When the oil is quite hot, brown the sandwiches in it until golden brown and crisp. Remove with a slotted spoon, drain on paper towels and transfer to a heated platter. Add the butter to the pan and reduce the heat to medium.

Quickly swirl in the garlic, then the anchovies and stir with a wooden spoon for 1 minute. Add the lemon juice, blend well and pour the sauce over the fried sandwiches. Serve immediately. '
