2) What interest did Britain have in interfering with German-Polish negotiations?
On 29th March, 1939, the German correspondent of 'The News Chronicle' (just expelled from Germany) brought the news of German troop movements near Poland (this information was from German generals) to London.
On 31st March, Chamberlain wrote a personal assurance to the Poles that in the event of their independence being threatened, the British and French governments would lend them all their support.
On 3rd April this guarantee to the Poles was announced in the House of Commons.
On 28th April, Hitler repudiated his non-aggression pact with Poland of 1934, and the Anglo-German naval agreement of 1935.
In point of fact, Chamberlain and Halifax used a Swedish go-between to attempt to dissuade Hitler from going to war. Halifax even urged Poland's Beck to negotiate with Hitler, pressure which Beck resisted.
So despite breaking the Versailles Treaty, breaking treaties with Czechoslovakia and repudiating other treaties with both Poland and Great Britain, the British were still urging peace on Hitler, right up until the 31st August, when he gave the order to atatck Poland.
It was only six days later than the original date set for it when he had been revelling in the opportunities provided by the signing of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact.Vive la liberte. Noor Inayat Khan, Dachau.

It's called Klaipeda and it was not "returned" but annexed
Given that he was trying to build a Greater German Thousand Year Reich, I hardly think he was going to ask in Lithuanian for the return of what he saw as German territory. I don't imagine he referred to Danzig as Gdansk, either, or Lwow/Lviv, or Aix-la-Chapelle, or Ljubljana.
He probably even referred to Cologne as Koln, and Vienna as Wien! Was the man crazy ?Vive la liberte. Noor Inayat Khan, Dachau.
