Frankly, I'm amazed someone hasn't complained about the term "retards" being thrown around like candy. AFAIK, it's generally considered pejorative.
I don't personally care, just find it surprising.

I don't have a problem with people with mental disabilities; I have a problem with the people who are supposed to be minding them not doing their damn job or taking them to inappropriate places.
The same goes for children, although in that case it's a lot worse. Why do people think that it's no big deal if their children are seriously pissing people off in a public place? Why am I supposed to make allowances because they couldn't keep their breeding mania under control?

Having a trisomic child is probably my worst fear for the future.
Generally speaking, I'm uncomfortable with any being that cannot understand the (verbal) inputs I give to them. That's why I'm very awkward with animals, babies and old people who have lost their minds (like my grandfather). I have never taken care of a trisomic, and it really doesn't appeal to me. I'd probably become very frustrated quickly, as I would seem not to be able to affect him.
I admire the people who take care of them though. It's just definitely not for me.

The thread title - "Are you good with retards and such?" - is hilarious based on its blisfful ignorance. The "and such" was actually funny to me, but the post is basically ridiculous and no longer funny. Not that it matters of any sort.
However, it is difficult to believe that 2 times 2 does not equal 4; does that make it true? On the other hand, is it really so difficult simply to accept everything that one has been brought up on and that has gradually struck deep roots – what is considered truth in the circle of moreover, really comforts and elevates man? Is that more difficult than to strike new paths, fighting the habitual, experiencing the insecurity of independence and the frequent wavering of one’s feelings and even one’s conscience, proceeding often without any consolation, but ever with the eternal goal of the true, the beautiful, and the good? - F.N.
Maybe somebody who is uncomfortable with who they are, and realizes they have a failing, and is trying to puzzle it out.
I've worked with "Special Needs" children. I hate the term. I found working with the profoundly retarded and those with extreme cases of Muscular Dystrophy the saddest, and most disturbing. The profoundly retarded because life holds so little potential for them, and the children with severe Muscular Dystrophy reminded me of the story "I Have no Mouth, and I must Scream."
The worst case combined the two. Since then "normally" retarded children, those that can communicate, can be educated up past potty-training, etc. I see instead as higher functioning. If you give them the chance, they will try so damn hard - harder than most adults I know. They can be very kind, and if you accept them for who they are, sad but not any problem at all.
However, and this may sound strange, my wife and I would have aborted if our little girl had Down's Syndrome, etc. We've both seen the toll having retarded and other handicapped (I mean like severe Muscular Dystrophy, not something like ADHD) children has on families, and we both wanted to have a normal, healthy family. Thank God we did not have to face that choice.
