Maybe we should institute non-market pricing, raise taxes and fund the universities to do the work instead, commercializing their work solely through American industry.
Cut out the non-American companies who are leaching.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Don't I know it. The rest of the world is leaching off of the innovation created in our system.
I understand why drug companies, amongst the most profitable in the world, make this cockamamie argument but I'm surprised you buy it, lol.
We have a drug market here. What drug companies don't like is governments use their power to buy in bulk to lower prices and play the pharma companies off against each other. That is the free market at work, not socialism.
Some of the drug laws you have over there are just scandalous, keeping cheaper generic drugs off the US market long after patents have expired, thus maintaining monopolies and preventing competition, presumably you support monopolies and cartels Dan?
Any views I may express here are personal and certainly do not in any way reflect the views of my employer. Tis the rising of the moon..
I pay $20 via insurance for a 90-day supply of a generic blood pressure med. Thank goodness it's allowed to be marketed, because it's name-brand counterpart runs $25 for a 30-day supply.

Mark ups on patent drugs are insane - up to 10,000 per cent on cost of production. The drug companies rate a little better in terms of consumer ethics than tobbaco companies, but not much.
check out this link, the 9 most profitable US companies by a wide margin are drug companies and they are raping US consumers

I think it extremely likely that some life-saving or life-prolonging treatments are unavailable in your systems. The government must control its costs in some fashion.
By being more efficient than the private sector, perhaps?
Though I suppose you are incapable of even considering that suggestion...
