Actually wait that is true.. what kind of idiot would leave a loaded gun on the table.. sheesh.. esp with pets around that could knock it down... makes you wonder..
For there is [another] kind of violence, slower but just as deadly, destructive as the shot or the bomb in the night. This is the violence of institutions -- indifference, inaction, and decay. This is the violence that afflicts the poor, that poisons relations between men because their skin has different colors. - Bobby Kennedy (Mindless Menance of Violence)

the cat obviously used its mind control powers to force the owner to load the gun and leave it on the counter top where the beast could strike.

No. They're not even useful as food.

Cats are evil cowards. They're more then willing to snuggle up to you and let you pet them (when they feel like it) as long as you're keeping their litter box clean and their food dish full of fresh grub but let one intruder break in and threaten you and suddenly they're no-where to be found. How many stories have you heard of cats saving their owners from drowning? None because it doesn't happen - they're too busy contentedly licking themselves on shore while their owner starts heading for the white light at the end of the tunnel.

You'd never catch Lassie doing that.

People need to stop relying on dogs and save their own dumb selves. I say, let 'em drown.

The man was cooking. The cat was in the kitchen. We can therefore presume the cat was obviously hungry because the selfish gun owner was too busy concentrating on feeding himself rather than spending a paltry couple of minutes feeding the puddy tat first.
He committed the ultimate crime of not attending to the needs of the head of the house first.
Shooting the guy was entirely justifiable under the circumstances.
Unless they find paw prints on the trigger this will have to be thrown out by the grand jury.

I wonder if the cat will get a chance to testify at its trial lol..

                                You're clueless:

                                Cat saves girl from assault
                                Cat saves owner from fire
Cat saves family from gas leak
                                Cat saves drowning lamb
                                Blind cat attacks prowler

As mentioned above, every year people are killed by dogs. Not so with cats.

And fellas, think about the ladies!
