The EU is trying to play with the big boys which means competing with all countries, including China and the US. Those vaunted social programs cost an arm and a leg and merely train those Europeans who I have met who come to the US for the monetary opportunities not possible within the EU.

The social programs provide things that people need. They also help to provide a safe and equitable social environment, which people like.

From a National Science Foundation survey dated from 2001:

A higher percentage of men than women answered every question but three correctly. The gender gap was 20 or more points for four questions:

* Lasers work by focusing sound waves (61 percent of men compared with 30 percent of women).

* Light travels faster than sound (89 percent of men compared with 65 percent of women).

* Earth takes one year to go around the Sun (66 percent of men compared with 42 percent of women).

* Earth goes around the Sun and not vice versa (86 percent of men compared with 66 percent of women).

More women than men answered the following questions correctly:

* The father's gene decides whether the baby is a boy or a girl (72 percent of women compared with 58 percent of men).

* Antibiotics do not kill viruses (55 percent of women compared with 46 percent of men).

Note that this poll shows a worse picture of the American public than the "The Week's" poll (granted, it's a few years out of date).

Polls are often junk unless they are done correctly. I have seen anti-abortion rights people claim that 80% of the American population is anti-abortion (true figure is closer to 1/3). How'd they get that poll result? They passed out the poll at a Sunday Catholic mass in a consevative town.

Yes, non-scientific polling will get you the results you want to not results that are worth anything.

Agahon, my point is that life and people are neither equitable or equal. I had always thought those whom I worked with could do my job once taught but found out otherwise. Only certain people I taught could perform many of my programming positions. The rest could not fathom it. So in the attempt to make all equal no one is allowed to live up to their potential without non-government help.
