Agahon, my point is that life and people are neither equitable or equal. I had always thought those whom I worked with could do my job once taught but found out otherwise. Only certain people I taught could perform many of my programming positions. The rest could not fathom it. So in the attempt to make all equal no one is allowed to live up to their potential without non-government help.
That's not what welfare is for. Welfare exists so that things get done - things virtually everyone wants - that the market doesn't.

If the European Union were a state in the USA it would belong to the poorest group of states. France, Italy, Great Britain and Germany have lower GDP per capita than all but four of the states in the United States. In fact, GDP per capita is lower in the vast majority of the EU-countries (EU 15) than in most of the individual American states.
Of course, comparing GDP per capita is next to meaningless. You can at least step up one level to compare PPP istead. No, PPP isn't completely accurate either, but it is far more accurate than GDP per capita.

I wonder if Oerdin think it makes the US look good to have its national science foundation unable to run a scientific poll.
goverment organizations are incomeptant in every level. Including the military. I was in the Navy, I saw how innefficient it was.
This is what you commies need to learn. The goverment cannot solve our problems. They cannot do anything right. Including polls.

The government tends to run things pretty well where I'm from. Americans just don't know how to hold their politicians responsible.
then why are you Canadians always *****ing about your slow health care system?

Using the same testing technology used in many national and international tests, the responses to these nine items were converted into a 0-100 scale.[4] The mean score for American adults on the Index of Scientific Construct Understanding was 55
Something more recent (oh, it has the earth & sun question too):
Very few Americans admit to not being interested in S&T issues. Only about 10 percent of surveyed Americans said they were not interested in news about scientific discoveries or new inventions and technologies. In Europe, however, half of surveyed residents said they were not interested in S&T.
Neither Americans nor Europeans got high marks in a 2001 quiz designed to measure their knowledge of science. Out of 13 questions, Americans answered an average of 8.2 correctly, Europeans 7.8.
Science knowledge in the United States and Europe is not improving. Respondents' ability to answer most questions about science has remained essentially unchanged since the 1990s, with one exception: more people now know that antibiotics do not kill viruses. This may be attributable to media coverage of drug-resistant bacteria, an important public health issue.
More Americans now agree with the theory of evolution. The 2001 NSF survey marked the first time that more than half (53 percent) of Americans answered "true" in response to the statement "human beings, as we know them today, developed from earlier species of animals." (In Europe, 69 percent responded "true.") Whether and how the theory of evolution is taught in public schools remains one of the most contentious issues in U.S. science education.
I kept the last quoted paragraph on the theory of evolution to stay on topic , which is laughing/bashing at America.
