US troops fire at freed hostage

Freed Italian hostage Giuliana Sgrena has been hurt by US troops firing at a car taking her to Baghdad airport soon after her release.
An Italian secret service agent was killed in the shooting at a checkpoint.

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi summoned the US ambassador demanding an explanation for what he called "such a serious incident".

The US military in Baghdad confirmed that forces shot at a vehicle and said an investigation had been launched.

"Coalition forces assigned to the Multinational Force-Iraq fired on a vehicle that was approaching a coalition checkpoint in Baghdad at a high rate of speed," it said in a statement.

"The recently freed Italian journalist Giuliana Sgrena was an occupant in the vehicle and was apparently injured," it went on, adding that details were still unclear.

Of course Bush didn't want Italy to get away with freeing a hostage, so he ordered an abush. It was just sheer unluck that the attack helicopters wa sent in the opposite direction and that the howitzers malfunctioned, otherwise the car would have been totally destroyed instead of what some guardians at a checkpoint was able to accomplish.

Yes, for certain, Bush is incompetent, even an ambush on friendly forces he can mess up.

      edit: damn spelliggn

With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

The car ignored our signals to stop and tried to crash through the checkpoint! How we were suppose to know they were friendlies when they were acting like hostiles?

Nice try, but you can't blame Bush for this one. The soldiers were following SOP.
'There is a greater darkness than the one we fight. It is the darkness of the soul that has lost its way. The war we fight is not against powers and principalities, it is against chaos and despair. Greater than the death of flesh is the death of hope, the death of dreams. Against this peril we can never surrender. The future is all around us, waiting, in moments of transition, to be born in moments of revelation. No one knows the shape of that future or where it will take us. We know only that it is always born in pain.'"

Why have checkpoints in a democracy enjoying full freedom?

SOP is a really bad excuse for any mistake, SOP would have killed Saddam and left no traces if they were fully followed in 2003, prolonging the worst part of the war by months or years.

Throw a grenade down the hole, and all problems will be gone. The grenade will never destroy any private property, it will never kill any innocent children, and that red pulp sticking to the spiderhole wall will be checked out by a DNA test and identified as a part of Saddam's ass. Yeah right... F*CK SOP

Apparantly, Berlusconi (the prime minister of Italy*) is not happy.
