Dogs are great companions but you must realize if you get a dog then you must care for him for the next 15 years. I wouldn't give my dog up for anything though.

        That's a good point Oerdin.

I wouldn't suggest getting a dog in a depressed state because of the amount of time and effort you have to put into taking care of it.

Maybe he has a friend with a dog he can spend time around, that way he gets the fun part of it without having to work to maintain the dog.

I'm a fellow sufferer of social phobia (with panic attacks and dangerously irrational behaviour sometimes).

I have found Cognitive Behavioural Therapy fairly useful and talking to a clinical psychologist can give you an insight into how you may be unconsciously perpetuating your problems, thereby enabling you to overcome them yourself.

The key is to actually get help as it's damned hard to get better without at least a view from outside your situation.

If you feel like talking feel free to PM me.

Best advice in the thread! Go and see a psychiatrist and get worked up. Your problem could very well be physiological and completely treatable. A counselor / therapist probably wouldn't hurt, but if your problem is physiological they won't really be able to help you. So check this first.

They've proven that schizophrenia and ADHD are genetic disorders? I don't think that's proven at all.

                This is difficult in Asia.

MORON, as for the social problems. A lot of what you seem to be saying is that you lack experience. This is a lot more common than you may think.

I'm teaching in mainland China and I usually have a time when I can talk to each of my students individually about whatever they want. I heard from a lot of students who say they want to be more social. I've also heard from a lot of students who overcame their anxieties. The point is that this is something you can fix. You can feel more comfortable in social situations. As you said, you need experience. Sitting at home in seclusion isn't going to give you expereince. You've got to go out. Find some friends you trust and try to hang out with them as much as possible. You'll pick up on the rules and such. It'll take some time, so don't expect yourself to be the life of the party immediately. Don't put pressure on yourself. Small steps are best. You will improve.

The important thing is that you have to work for it. Depression just doesn't go away. You have to actively strive for a better life. Only you can do this.

There seems to be many causes of Shizophrenia, But it does seem to have a genetic component. ADHD is definitely mostly genetic. I should know, I have it, and it runs in my family. Last I heard there is a mutation linked to ADHD on chromosome 16.

Well-prepared and seasoned, a dog is not just for Christmas, but if jointed and placed in the freezer, a medium to large one should see you through to Easter.

Chihuahuas and pekes are more snacky items though.

Try taking up painting, sculpture, or some kind of art.

Last I had heard ADHD was like cancer, only not as well understood. Possibly a series of related syndromes or diseases. So there is evidence that at least some cases are caused by genetics? That probably explains my girlfriend's family then! Dinner with them is like having dinner with Katherin Hepburn's family.
