I just find it difficult to make such a bold statement like that. It's too inclusive. I've yet to meet any racist Japanese people, so to say that they all are seems rude. Yes, I've heard a lot of people relate different experiences. There may be a lot of racists in Japan, but I'm not going to treat the Japanese people I meet any differently because of that. I've met quite a few racist people here in China, but I won't say that all Chinese are racists nor do I expect strangers on the street here to hate me because I'm white.

Aaaah you guys have to attach your photo on any resumes you send out too? I've heard of people photoshopping 'em to make themselves look more pale skinned

No, he just sent photos to speed up the paperwork process before he arrived. He may have been asked. I wasn't, but I've worked here before.

One of my American buddies left Shanghai to live in Hokkaido, Japan for a year, He just returned to China, one of his main reasons was he was so sick of racism in Japan, after being treated so well in China.

Where he lived in Japan (a smaller city), some bars, bathhouses, restaurants and the like had signs proclaiming "No Foreigners." He asked some businesses for explanations, usually they complained about drunken, rowdy Russian sailors making trouble.

That only happens in Hokkaido and a couple other prefectures in the far north. It is because of Russian sailors causing trouble.

The Japanese are pretty good about racism by East Asian standards, from what I've seen and heard. I would certainly be surprised to find out that parents here didn't want their children taught by a black person, nor have I ever heard a Japanese person say they hate Koreans or Chinese people...

I'm not so sure about attitudes in the extremes of the countryside, I suppose it doesn't matter much. Peasants stare in slack-jawed wonder at foreigners of any color. Is there much of that in the most remote rural parts of SK?

Ah ok, in Korea it depends what kind of foreigner you are, personally I've always been treated very well and there are definately some clubs that unofficially ban foreigners (ie foreigners always get told that its a "member only" club).

I haven't heard of any such clubs in Shanghai, but then ... this is Shanghai. You may know that some Chinese strongly dislike Shanghainese, criticizing them, among other things, as being western yuppy wannabes, better accepting of foreigners than they are of their rural compatriots.

I was surprised to hear that Kiwis and Ozzies might be paid less in South Korea! Do Brits get paid extra? Surely those from southern Ireland get some sort of bonus as well?

My girlfriend told me that when her mother was extremely happy when she found out that her daughter was dating a white man. Apparently white men are said to treat their woman far better than Japanese men. Her mother may be biased though, considering she's a Shanghainese woman living in Japan.

Interestingly enough, the girlfriend does stereotype the Chinese, despite being 3/4ths Chinese and a fluent Shanghainese and Mandarin speaker. She claims that most Chinese people are stingy and will do anything to make money. I guess some stereotypes cross national boundries despite cultural roots.

I think it's natural to stereotype on one's own population. I knew a Chinese guy (very very proud of being Chinese) who said basically the same, but without a hint of criticism about it. At hearing him, it seemed like urban China was swept by a wave of hysterical money-grabbing. Actually, I think it's not that far from the truth.

It's true. A lot of people are going about this unscrupulously, making counterfeits and even "fake" items. Not that long ago they found a factory making soy source by dissolving human hair in chemicals ::vomit::

Another case from 2003 (IIRC). The owner of an eatery poisoned the food of a neighbouring store, after losing out in the competition, killing a whole bunch of innocent bystanders.
