        Since you're apparently German, one would have expected it rather to remind you of the Early Modern principle of cuius regio eius religio, which meant that each prince of the Empire got to determine whether his principality was Catholic or Lutheran. No such privilege was according medieval rulers, who sometimes found crusades declared against them if they did not toe Rome's line.
