the UMP (the party of Nicolas Sarkozy, a bit of a maverick, he was the minister of edcuation, i think now hes foreign minister??) voted for the increase in maximum working hours, as did the UDF. both are right wing. the PS and the PCF voted against. the final vote in the National Aseembly was 370 to 180. The bill was introdcued by the UMP. Jacques Chirac was for the bill. So was Jean Pierre Raffarin (the PM)

UMP = Union pour un Mouvement Populaire (Union for a Populist Movement)
UDF = Union pour la Démocratie Francaise (Union for French Democracy)
PS = Parti Socialiste (Socialist Party)
PCF = Parti Communiste Francaise (French Communist Party)

Frankly, I dont think unemployment goes very far from 10%. i think France needs to suspend, decrease, or change the amount of money they give to unemployed people.

    • As long as the solidarity is there the unions are not required. I hope they do strike in the face of the French state trying to erode their hard-won rights...

Yet still allow profits to soar off the backs of their employees? Unemployment needs to be sorted if so high, but why should the working class of France be punished for capitalism's inadequacy?

        • Yeah, those Frogs would be better off living in Moscow of Beijing. ****ing capitalists screwing things up all the time. If it weren't for them we'd all have nice cushy peasant jobs and none of us would have to worry about unemployment.

          • Still all the dumping grounds of capitalism that they use to threaten us about 'where the work will be going'. It's not just one country affected by it, it's the whole world. And it's very much on the basis of divide and conquer. Look around you! If you think capitalism is so lovely and works so well, go to some African states and see what it has done to them.

You know, the rights you have have been hard fought for, yet people like you are so flippant at the thought of fighting when they are snatched away. Where do you draw the line? Do you allow it to continue? The American working class has, and look where that has lead, and for that matter, is leading...

            • People like me are flippant? Listen, pup, you don't hold a corner on sacrifice in all your twenty-some tender years.

As for where things might be going, I would bet a **** load that nobody has ever had it as good as the average French or American worker. And they got it that good under capitalism. So consider well what you wish for.

Don't you ever dare patronise me, you know nothing about my life or what goes on in it

And it could be better for the whole damn world. Stop thinking about your one little corner of the world because there are people in abject poverty out there. People won the rights they have now. The right to vote (not like that seems to matter a jot now anyway), the right to shorter working weeks, etc, etc, yet you seem to stand loyally by your capitalist establishment when it tries to strip these away. They need to be defended, like they have been fought for in the past or they will soon be eroded away. Again, you can chose to bury your head in the sand, but don't ever dare patronise me.

                • You're a fine one to talk of patronising.

Oh, and as soon as you come up with a better system, I'll listen. Until then, you're just another head beaking off about nothing in particular. Nothing much new there from the left.

Am I now? Because someone who knows nothing about this stuff apart from what his daddy does comes sticking his nose in? You worship your neighbour and it's propaganda machine and see where it takes you in the fullness of time.

I don't pull economic theory out of my ass on a wishful thought either. What do you do aside from engage in wishful thinking?
