No comment. I'm not going to make any statements that people can use against me here. I'm just saying that Stalin would not let the situation go to waste and he was exploiting for his own purposes. That's all I'm going to say.

I'm kinda surprised no one's mentioned A Bridge Too Far. Probably not the best, but certainly pretty darn solid.

It was somewhat more complicated then that: there was a split among the Commies between the left-wing (represented by the union POUM) who advocated revolution, siding with the anarcho-syndicalists (represented by the CNT); and the Stalinists (PSUC) who opposed the revolution. The Stalinists eventually came to dominate the gov't as the Soviet Union was the only major state that didn't have an arms embargo with the Republicans (including France and the UK), so extorted the Republican gold reserves and gov't policy through their arms sales. Eventually, the Stalinists and their liberal allies destroyed the POUM, CNT, and the revolution. And were in turn destroyed by the Nationalists.

Anyways, best are Full Metal Jacket, Apocalypse Now, Das Boot, and All Quiet on the Western Front.

For worst, I'll go with Troy. Or the Patriot.

Hmmm, Apocalypse Now is my favorite by a long chalk - if you can call it a war movie. The Thin Red line, Das Boot, All Quiet on the Western Front, For King and Country.

Worst? Well there have been so many - the Battle of the Bulge would have to come close - the last reels are filimed in a desert, instead of forests because they ran out of money.

              THIN RED LINE WAS HORRIBLE!

what kind of war movie doesn't have any war?

I'm gonna make myself infamous now by saying I thought Pearl Harbor was better than Tora Tora Tora. Though I think I do need to see TTT again to reevaluate, but I didn't care for it much. I spent most of the movie anxious for it to be over. Just didn't have the drama of the new one, it was kinda matter of fact. Eh.

I didn't mind the romance stuff in Pearl Harbor. Maybe they could have scaled it back a touch, but overall it wasn't a deal killer. The raid at the end I do think was pretty dumb, anti-climatic, and unnecessarily lengthened the movie.

I'm amazed only one person has mentioned Braveheart so far. One of the best movies ever, war or anything.

I didn't mind Troy either. Not one of the greatest for sure, but overall I thought it was a good movie.

I liked Blackhawk Down too. It felt very real. I could identify with the men in that more than in other movies. It felt like less of a caracature of soldiers. I dunno.

I threw up during one part of the Blackhawk Down (ran to the bathroom thank goodness).. when they were getting a bullet if I remember right out of a guy... a really bloody scene.. talk about realism.

Of the one's mentioned, put me down for Apocalypse Now, Paths of Glory, and Das Boot. Add to that:

                      Grand Illusion
                      Gallipoli
                      M*A*S*H
                      Three Kings

and an obscure little movie called A Midnight Clear, which it seems nobody I know has ever seen (but I'll bet someone here has).

The Bridge on the River Kwai

                            Gallipoli

A special mention for Escape to Victory. Sylvester Stallone is about as good a goalkeeper as he is an actor, and it has Pelé (and many other footballers) in it, even though theyre all terrible actors.
