  • Best and Worst war movies

I'm in the mood for war movies. I just watched Tora Tora Tora last night on the history channel. Still one of my favourite movies. The special effects in that movie hold up very well in 35 years. I recommend it. It's probably not what I would call best, but it's in my top 10 war movies.

So what are your favourites, and what are the worst? I'm looking for suggestions. I heard battle of britain is a decent movie. Should I watch it? I admit, I haven't watched that many "older" war movies. As a kid, I never cared for older movies. But now I'm more mature, I can appreciate them.

I actually bought that movie before I watched. big mistake. It's actually not bad, but I have no desire to watch it again.

"The Thin Red Line" isn't really a war film- it's an art film with war in it. It's my favourite, however.

The original "All quiet on the Western Front", and "The Big Red One" are good ones. So is "Ice cold in Alex".

It's not bad as an action movie, just not terribly accurate.

                        Best: Saving Private Ryan

Worst: anything made before 1975... and Pearl Harbor

and Black Hawk Down was awesome, I don't know what is up with you haters, but that movie rocked...

John Wayne wins the Vietnam War?

Well, Tuntematon Sotilas (Unknown Soldier) takes the pot.
Also, Midnight Clear and When Trumpets Fade are good.
I've allways wanted to play "Russ Meyer's Civilization"

Pearl Harbor definitely ranks as one of the worst war films ever. The movie Ted Turner made about Stonewall Jackson (I've forgotten the name) comes pretty close, as did his version of "Gettysburg".

"Tora! Tora! Tora!" and "Saving Private Ryan" are definitely among the best war films. To that list I'd like to add "The Longest Day" and "Is Paris Burning".

"Kelly's Heros" is probably the most fun war movie ever.
