That's quite interesting Chris.

I understand perfectly well written portuguese but it's quite difficult to me to understand it when they talk.

Italian is exactly the other way round, spoken italian is much easier than written italian to me.

... and I don't really know why?

I completely agree with Waku. The problem of Portuguese is that its phonetics sets it apart from any other Latin language. In written however it's almost identical to Spanish.

About the Italian, many times I have to say to myself what Prometeus has written so I can get the meaning. The more to the South of Italy yo go the closer Italian is to Spanish. I tend to watch RAI a lot and it's so funny for me to compare accents: people I barely understand: Northerners. People who actually speak a Spanish dialect but mellowed with an Italian accent: Southerners

The more you go south, the more italian avoided external influences, resembling to original latin...

Spanish and italian are a lot alike, JB. I easily understand written spanish, but you have to remember that's because southerners ( and sardinians in particular ) were spaniards for almost four-five centuries.

Welll, from my experiences with Italian people, I can say that I can understand without problems 80% of what they say (if they don't speak too fast, that is).

Same goes for them when we speak Spanish, I think. In fact, I've been having long conversations with Italian people this month, in which they said something in Italian, and I replied to it in Spanish. It works!

Regarding the Northerners/Southerners differences, I've been told that the Vicenza dialect (or variety) is the most close to Spanish (it's strange, 'casue Vicenza lies in the north, in azone hardly influenced by the Spanish, but I once met a guy from Vicenza and I can say that we could understand each other pretty well).
