  • Nomads:

Now that the camp has been set up, it is time for the Nomads to get to work and find food, so that they may continue their travels.

40 gnomes will set out on a hunting expedition to increase the food stocks. (I'm assuming that they can use bows to hunt, since the technology exists, even though they are not "bow gnomes" that are a part of a standing military)

6 gnomes and 2 bow gnomes will patrol the area around the camp, looking for anything of interest and taking note of the geography.

The remaining gnomes will stay at camp and practice weaving their bags, bow strings, clothes, ect...

    • Yes, they can hunt with bows, although they will fare little better than every else's civilian population should you actually be attacked. General Ludd, you should note that if you assign a gnome to do something, that gnome will not breed that turn. This includes gnomes in the military. So with a population of 56, you've assigned 6 to be in the military, 6 to patrol the camp, and forty to hunt, leaving only four gnomes to breed. That'll give you somewhere between two and six gnomes next turn. Read the first couple posts in this thread, gnome population growth was discussed in detail there.

Or maybe that was what you intended, and I should just shut up.

It was intended. We're a nomadic band, so we can't afford to have too big a population, and the low food stocks have to take priority at this point anyways. But I believe it's actually 6 civilian gnomes at home - two of the gnomes on patrol are ment to be military.

EDIT: Sorry, I was under the impression that I had 52 civilians for some reason. I'll change the patroll to 4 and let six stay home.

            Twin Lakes to Nomads:
Hello newcomers! Welcome to the land of Johnson's Lawn. We are the Twin Lake Gnomes, hailiing from the west. We can not offer you much right now as it is currently a time of strife for our people. The tribe of gnomes to your west, in the bushes, are horrible barbarians. They have enacted raids against many nations of gnomes, and are becoming quite a nuisance as they lured our former allies to their side! Our people are crying out for retribution because of a recent attack against us. We would gladly give you the technology for our spears and throwing spears, in addition to our undying friendship, if you would send gnomes to aid one of our assault groups or to help defend our city.

Thank you for your kind greetings. We will keep in mind what you have told us about these bush gnomes... but I am afraid that we can not help you. We are but a small band of traveling gnomes and can not afford to get involved in such a conflict.

Also five Gnomes from C.F.C. will be sent to the Nomads with greetings and samples of our rope technology. They should try to learn about the foreigners and their techs, especially about that "archery"... All of those "diplomats" are to equip themselves with the weaponry they deem neccessary...
The diplomats are greeted warmly and taken to Chief Ludd's tent where they are seated infront of the chief and four of his personal guards. They are given drinks, and a generous serving of ham while they talk.

Thank you for these ropes, they are a most fascinating thing - what are they made of? They are much more sturdy than our grass strings but... what can they be used for? A bow requires a thread of much more finesse, and clothes fashioned out of these would be hot and bulky. While a novel thing indeed... I am afraid that we can not divulge the secrets of our grass string bows for something that has no apparent use.

But, please, feel free to stay in our camp for the night... tell us about this lawn. We are eager to learn about the different gnomes here, and what this land has to offer.

In what capacity? Ant cavalry? Twig Gnomes? Speaking of ant cavalry, what are you arming them with? Do you want them to use spears? You don't have any other weapons technology, so that's what I'd recommend.

Also, due to calculator error, you have a significantly larger population than I had previously thought.

Thanks for the clarification, General Ludd.

Sorry, I was in a rush. They should be twig gnomes. And yes, ant calvary uses spears.

Then, how about another trade? We need the range of your bows to defend against the savages, and you need food and knowledge about this lawn.
So here´s the deal: You send a dozen of your archers to us; They shall be treated as our own gnomes, with full rights (including the competitions participation right that can lead to a fancy title...) and access to our food supply.
They shall take apprentices from our population to always keep their numbers stable. The archery technology will remain within the group of archers according to an oath the apprentices will have to swear, so you´re not giving it away.
In exchange, we will send a variety of foodstuff to your camp on a regular basis, as long as the archers remain at our service.
You can keep the ropes and use them as means of security (they can safely carry several gnomes, so they can save lives when climbing up bushes and trees. Also they can be formed into snares that won´t break even if birds are caught with it.

And thank you again for these ropes... you say that you can catch birds with these? Perhaps I undervalued their usefullness.
