I thought trade efficiency only determined how much of the trade you can get not how high the chance to get it is.
I am pretty sure that the monarch's administrative skill plays a role but there is most probably more variables.

I have a very high trade efficiency and yet I get out competed by the new world nations.

One thing you can do is, in a specific centre of trade, roll over the shields of the other nations. It should tell you that you have "x% chance to compete" against that nation.

As France, for instance, after taking shrewd commercial practices, I was able to get 5 merchants in all the nearish centres of trade.

I have over 60% chance in the COTs that I control and less than 10% in nearby COTs.

When I had no COTs I had far better chances in all COTs. Before I got my own COT I had 5 merchants in over 5 COTs now it is hard to keep 5 in one of the COTs that I have. Apparently 65-70% chance to compete is not enough.

At one pint I thought that maybe my traders get sabotaged or something but there are no messages to confirm that.

I'm not sure, but I think there is a penalty if you control a COT in a province not of your accepted culture.

As far as going above and beyond historical for small countries, this is to some extent possible with the European countries, I don't think it ever has been with the others. (Maybe China if they still have that event to not become isolationist after Zhang He's death.)

Though I've achieved wonderful results with Bavaria (It was a little annoying that I couldn't get more german provinces to be home provinces, so I couldn't unite Germany under my banner) and Scotland (I just never could complete the annexation of England, they refused to be annexed and kept starting colonies that I then had to track down and eliminate).

What's changed since EU2? I'm trying to figure out if it's time to go back and resume the glorious rise of Bavaria.

The biggest change is the event system. Instead of country specific ones, they're all generic (except for a few flag changing ones dependent on ownership of provinces). Basically the idea is that the game starts and everything that happens is dependent on how the country performs. There's also royal successions and personal unions now.

I was just wandering through the thread about the patch and noticed MrTs note down the bottom. Please tell me that I can just download the patch from somwhere and install it at a later stage?
I don't install things on anything connected to the internet and don't like the sound of the 'updater' at all ...

The updater just downlods the file for you. If you can find it somewhere else, there no problem with that.

Is there any way to force an end to a personal union? I'm playing as Spain, have conquered the Aztecs and Maya, rule the Italian peninsula, have just inherited the throne of Austria...and friggin' Corsica decides that they're going to take my throne just before I DoW the Inca.

No. You must just wait it out until your king dies.

                            Overall:
Too few Events, AI not delivering, "Pushed AI's" depends too much on Luck (Last Game: Ming (Superhuge),Münster (gets killed anyhow)..), Succession/Inheritage quite unbalanced (France got Austria), most Provinces stayed Catholic, so no real Religion Wars either.

Performance is acceptable on my fairly old System.

Tried the Historical Improvement Project, but that seriously screwed my Palatinate->Germany Game
Not in the sense of crashing but Germany suddenly desolving, shoud've read the changes first i guess.

I miss many of the Comfort Features Victory:Rev, HoiD even EU2 had.
Like: Message when Unit has arrived, Automatic Trader sending, building Infrastructure directly from Ledger (Ever built Taxhouses in 50+provinces? Not even the old Shortcuts for 'Next province/County works Not fun)

Unfortunatly many important Stats dont get mention in Pop-Ups
(Cav does Shock*4 that would be nice to know)

Then on the other Hand, the other Day I started a 4 hour France Session so it cant be that bad can it?
Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!

You can build infrastructure from the ledger.

I'm going with to few events and the AI isn't up to the challenge. I know Paradox was intending the game to have fewer events so that the game was less deterministic but the current form is ****** as I've never ever seen Spain form nor the greater Austro-Hungarian Empire or Russia or...
