Sometimes you have no choice but to give your opponents a chance to shoot themselves. It doesn't work that often, but when it does.........

That's exactly what happened. The opponents shot themselves in the foot with a high-powered rocket launcher. The play records of the hand showed that the opponent with the Ace still had the 10 in hand as well when he played the Ace, while his partner had the king bare at the time. I guess he was thinking I had a singleton heart and a doubleton diamond honor and wanted the lead so he could lead a diamond through my hand.

This is one of those hands where you have to make your own luck. I did after all have nothing to lose and a lot to gain.

I'm wondering tho, what would have happened had the heart AK being in the same hand?

Wandering OT for a moment, I notice your sig and your mention of "wrath of a disgruntled partner" spurred me to comment.

With Civ2 you can add one line to your game.txt and get to choose the "Barbarian Wrath" setting normally available only to scenario designers. I wanted to show the effect to my brothers this Xmas, so I started a game on that setting. I tried counting the number of units spawned, but then a second revolt spawned which made things a little difficult. (I added a highlight over both spawn centers)

Not the way the bid went. Clearly the 5 club was a gambling (I haven't seen it bid that high though) bid that showed lots of clubs but not much else. The declarer might even be out of spades. A spade lead could give him a free finesse of your partner. Very, very, bad.

By 'gambling' you mean a pre-empt? I had nine solid clubs, so I bid two more than I thought I could make, risking the loss of no more than 500 points if doubled. At the time I thought it a quite a routine bid on my hand given it was on OKBridge.

I also have to say it's probable that they had never defended a 5-level pre-empt before, after all I had never declared one before! And I must say it's a lot of fun ...

Suppose you have 3 spades, 4 hearts, 2 diamonds and 4 clubs with 13HCP. Your partner has 4 spades, 4 hearts, 4 diamonds and 1 club.

So the bidding can go 1C-2D-2H-4H. Something like that.
                1. That is not the most economical way to show the suits.
                2. How do you show the hearts if you only have one bid to make (6-9 points)
                3. Most people play a jumpshift as strong. Since the new suit is single round forcing anyway.

I think you found the "massive waves of barbarians" setting. And judging by all the red cities, they were definitely wiping out your civilization.

Sort of like a pre-empt, but you had more points for a pre-empt so you were betting on certain cards at the right places. It helps when your opponents did the wrong thing, too.

                          1. Economy is situation dependent. Doing this eliminates ambiguity. If you bid a 4-card major, your partner can't tell if you have only 4, or you have more. Bidding a minor helps to keep it low.

                          2. Okay, how do you show a 5+ card suit with 6-9 points with your bidding system?

                          3. That's just an example. You could assume it a 1D, or whatever.

Of course the real question is....
Are there enough Bridge players at apolyton to get a few games going? Even going to a site to play, it's more fun if you know(somewhat anyway) the people you're playing with. And it always means more bragging material. I don't think we need to do anything elaborate like a ranking system, just some games for fun.

                            I'd be interested.

Maybe on a late saturday evening.

... and I, but late Saturday translates into ungodly hours of a Sunday morning in real time doesn't it?
