  • I think there was a game once where I killed Jafar and got 2 of his blue spell books, but I'm not positive.

    My armies usually consist of around 3 Elven Knights/Paladins, 2 Wizards, 2 Clerics, and 2 Elven Longbowmen.

    • I don't really have a usual army stack. It depends upon the units I have available and the targets I going after. However, if I can get a halfling city near adamantium, I do tend to make stacks of 8 or 9 slingers. Slinger stacks are really good for going after enemy wizard's cities. Going after nodes or monster lairs often requires tougher melee troups or flying units. Of course, a slinger stack beefed up with flaming weapons, flight, and true sight are tough in melee and fly.

      How do you guys like "Call the Void"? I think of it as MOM's equivalent to Nukes. Anyway, since I have never had the patience to cast Spell of Mastery, maybe one of you can tell me. Can Spell Blast, ruin a Spell of Mastery attempt?

      • Well of course it depends on your target. The above doesn't even have a hero in it! But since missilers are vulnerable to shield spells (or whatever it's called), I like to mix it up to make sure I can hurt any enemy that happens along.

        aside: Once I had a hero guarding a portal between worlds. He was about mid-strength. Something happened- I don't know what- but the image changed from a human to the dwarf and he became easily the most powerful unit I've ever seen: a 99 in every category (except health, that started around 50 and he lost 1 hit/turn, until it went negative- still alive though!), and almost every special ability that is in the game! Every other wizard immediately feared me, and it occurred to me that this hero was more powerful than I was! Good thing they don't revolt against you! And when he appeared in battle, a 2-square haze appeared around him (this guy was oozing with power!). Unfortunately, when he went (teleported) to attack, the game froze up. I interpreted this as him destroying both worlds with one blow.

          I only use "Call the Void" if somebody really pisses me off, or I need to soften up the target city's defenses. Otherwise I'm content with doom bolts and Vortexes (btw Vortexes are great in lairs/ruins/etc. where you only have flying units and they're all ground units; just keep directing the vortex towards the bad guys!)

          And yes Spell Blast does work on Spell of Mastery. I've had to do it on occasion. Another reason to mix up spell books, I love the "true" versions of disenchants!

          • Okay after reading this thread for awhile I wanted to play it again...MoM is once again on my computer.

            But what is the highest version of the game? I have 1.2 available. I'm sure it went beyond that. Does anyone know where I can get the latest version?

            • Highest version is 1.31. This fixes many bugs and vastly improves the play balance. It was also supposed to improve the AI performance, but I think it just lets the computer cheat more. In earlier versions, missile troops got to shoot twice per combat turn. Now they just shoot once and missile immunity actually works. Look at the 1st or 2nd page of this thread. There are links for the 1.31 patch there.

                • I just realized that I don't have a crippled version after all!!
                  I was upset because the save and load buttons were blanked in the menu screen, and the only way to save was to quit and choose continue from the opening screen.

                  I just was playing again and accidentally clicked on one of the lines for saved games, and a cursor for me to type in appeared and the save button lit up!!

                      • You have to add EMS memory settings into the startup scripts and files and move everything possible to high mem in the DOS settings.

                          • getting it to run under dos was a nightmare. I had to do that since my computer won't play sound for dos games under windows 95. I tried for 2 hours to get the memory right. I finally got to watch the opening movie and it then kicked me off for insufficient memory. I got it to load completely after I told it "no music" in the setup, but then I had no mouse!!

                            I finally gave up and am running it under windows 95, which gives me a mouse, and automanages the memory settings. I have no sound, but I can still play!

                            • Ack! On my installation, the game freezes when I try to bring my flying warships into a battle on land. Oh well, there goes the invisible flying warships strategy.

                              • Try putting the following in your config.sys file
                                DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
                                DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE 2765 RAM
                                DOS=HIGH,UMB

                                and using DEVICEHIGH where ever you see a DEVICE in the rest of the file.
