Oofff...considering the 2nd clue the first clue wasn't what it appeared to be. It isn't Douglas Adams Hitchhikers Guide then?Skeptics should forego any thought of convincing the unconvinced that we hold the torch of truth illuminating the darkness. A more modest, realistic, and achievable goal is to encourage the idea that one may be mistaken. Doubt is humbling and constructive; it leads to rational thought in weighing alternatives and fully reexamining options, and it opens unlimited vistas.

I'll throw out another game I've played (on my IBM 80286)
as I'm at work atm, I'm not sure the year or other specifics, but do remember having it in 1988, probably was before that as it came on the computer.
also text adventure, and based on famous writer (and not previously mentioned in this thread)Insert witty phrase here

I knew that was coming.
Sherlock Holmes was great. In fact, I loved most of those text adventures - there was always some funny stuff you could do ... like locking Watson in the cupboard and trying to complete the game without him, only to find you need him for something and have to catch the train back to Baker Street 3 days later to let him out.
Code:You are in your room in Baker Street. There is a door to the north and a cupboard to the west. Watson is here. > Talk Watson You talk to Watson > N You go north. You are in the hallway. Watson follows. Stairs lead down and to the south is your room. > S You go South. You are in your room. Watson follows. > W Cupboard door is locked. > Unlock cupboard door. You unlock the cupboard door. > W You go west. You are in the cupboard. It is dark. Watson follows. > E You go east. You are in your room. > Lock cupboard door. You lock the cupboard door.
If I'm posting here then Counterglow must be down.
