Offhand, I think it was the left hand not knowing what the right hand was doing - ie, some people in power in Russia felt a mid-east war would help shift the balance of power in the region. Or, possibly, a war in and of itself wasn't needed, just the bluff of one, in order to change the balance of power - which might explain Russia's stopping Egypt from initiating Operation Dawn. Or to show that the imperialist zionist pig(tm) was an aggessor. Or it was merely part of the geopolitical game of chess the Russians had with the US.

I don't think that the soviet union was the driving force in that war. Nasser got support from the SU, and now he felt that he can wiggle his **** around, by trying to strangle Israel's energetic supply.

Well, sure. There probably would have been a war (eventually) with or without the false intelligence reports - thats why I listed a number of causes.

I think you underestimate the USSR.

Whether the Arabs would have attacked without USSR support is questionable. The USSR was clearly trying to become the sole and exclusive champion of Arab causes to get the US, France and the UK out of greater Arabia. The reason of course is OIL.

Eli, all I did was spend 10 minutes searching. I searched for 'Israeli 7th armored brigade' and got numerous links, including the one you like. Perhaps if you search for other famous units you would get more. Anything I can do to help let me know.

One unmentioned reason [I think?] was the Arabs complete and total incompetence on the battle field (excluding Arab Legion). Lack of pay, good equipment, and most importantly in this case, motivation. Admittedly the Jews and Israel had even less equipment and salaries to give out, considering that the Arab states had oil, but they had motivation.
If the Arabs had the motivation of the Jews, they could have won it easily, because they outnumbered the Jews. However, they did not- they were not fighting for their survival and existence. If they were defeated, they could just go back to their homes, etc.

Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours."--General Sir Charles James Napier

Not that I have it. But I've read very good reviews, and I understand that he actually used tons and tons of evidence and interviews of the Israeli side.
