The source may be Salon, but y'all are blind if you haven't noticed that the neo-cons have been gunning for him since day one. At first it was just undercutting everything he'd say, but now they are openly calling for him to go. I did a thread about this crap two years ago. I think Powell should reason, and leave the government completely in the hands of the neo-cons, so they can proceed to burn them selves up in a blaze of self-glorification.

No one's denying the possibility that Gingrich is doing Rummy's dirty work; I think that's probably the case. It's not an "open secret" however, merely an as yet unproven rumor. Gingrich could be speaking out against Powell of his own accord.

        What Drake said.

For the record, Che, I think the fact that Powell has survived this long is testimony to his skills behind the scenes. And *IF* the Grinch.. err.. Gingrich is doing this under orders from Rummy or other neocons, it smells like impatience/desperation (damnit, is that guy still here!) to me.

Newt. Who the Hell cares what damned Newt says?
If anything, it makes me like Powell all the more.

What's most telling is Shrub hasn't said anything about this yet. You'd think his most popular member of the Administration would be a priority to protect.

Bush is smart enough to know that nobody with a speckle of sense cares what Gingrich says anymore, and certainly not what he says about Powell.

                Why would he?

Acknowledging a statement made by a former party leader guy would put more light on them.

Now, if it was Rummy himself who said it, Bush would be quick to condemn.

But Gingrich is not in power anymore. Bush won't say anything unless it gains momentum. He'll just wait for it to go away.

Going to the press like this is a tried-and-true Washington tactic for somebody who is losing an argument. Whenever you are weak, you try to widen the circle of the discussion in order the change the dynamics of the argument.

Gingrich's comments strongly indicate to me that Rumsfeld is not getting his way on a lot of issues and that Bush is listening to Powell quite a lot nowadays.

I read Gingrich as hooked into Rumsfeld, not the neocons. Rumsfeld is not a neocon.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

                    Rumsfeld is not a neocon.

Is that because he is too old and must be an eldercon

                      Most neo-cons are old .

They'd have to be, they are ex-Trotskyists (I'm not making this up, btw).

I have to admit this is the first time I've heard the word neo-con.

Nice angle DanS I hadn't thought of that.

I think it's BS the way Powell has been treated since day one. A good soldier doing his job.
