The source may be Salon, but y'all are blind if you haven't noticed that the neo-cons have been gunning for him since day one. At first it was just undercutting everything he'd say, but now they are openly calling for him to go. I did a thread about this crap two years ago. I think Powell should reason, and leave the government completely in the hands of the neo-cons, so they can proceed to burn them selves up in a blaze of self-glorification.

No one's denying the possibility that Gingrich is doing Rummy's dirty work; I think that's probably the case. It's not an "open secret" however, merely an as yet unproven rumor. Gingrich could be speaking out against Powell of his own accord.KH FOR OWNER!

For the record, Che, I think the fact that Powell has survived this long is testimony to his skills behind the scenes. And *IF* the Grinch.. err.. Gingrich is doing this under orders from Rummy or other neocons, it smells like impatience/desperation (damnit, is that guy still here!) to me.

Going to the press like this is a tried-and-true Washington tactic for somebody who is losing an argument. Whenever you are weak, you try to widen the circle of the discussion in order the change the dynamics of the argument.
Gingrich's comments strongly indicate to me that Rumsfeld is not getting his way on a lot of issues and that Bush is listening to Powell quite a lot nowadays.
I read Gingrich as hooked into Rumsfeld, not the neocons.
