Yep, that's it and a better picture, it also gives the proportion due to the people. Standing below that cathedral you get some... strong feelings! Especially if you're not accostumed to that kind of architecture.
There's also a "gothic village" somewhere in France or Germany (or was it Italy). Crap I knew I should have kept all those guides in the library.
Hmmm I wouldn't know where to search. The best however has got to be the well known Agia Sophia in Constantinople. Before they ripped it apart that is. But I doubt there were cameras at that time.
Meteora has some nice cathedrals on top of forbitting barren rocks miles from the ground, they almost seem to grasp the sky. Also the Agion Oros, the Holy Mountain in the third leg of Chalkidiki in Macedonia has some monasteries and cathedrals from the time Christianity was yet a new religion.
However gothic architecture never really took a hold in these parts despite we having received our fare share of gothic visits in the first millenium. Rodos island should have some maybe. It has a panspermia of architectural styles.
Correct me if I am wrong. Orthodoxy was always the preffered christian religion in Turkish empire. They allowed you to build chuirches and maybe even was exempt froom taxes?
So why havent you built cathedrals during turkey rule?
Catholics on the other hand, arhem. Not even a small village could build a small church without a direct permission from the Sultan. Getting the permit included a perilous travel to Istanbul and lots of bribes.
Actually, first written record of the mountainous area my folks are from is in 1600 when they equip a team to go and seek permission to build a church. They got it too

The Holy Monastery of St. Stephen also in Meteora.
I've been there. I'm not sure if I entered this specific church
(I remember I bought a postcard with it to send it to the only Steven I know), but I think I did

Cool monasteries btw
I always thought Orthodox monasteries were cool. Always were much more mystic then Catholic counterparts.
They preserved much more of the past days... I can't image western monks not washing themselves at all to not let them think of each other as possible sexual partners...

Vetty really? It is the first I heard of. All I know is that Othomans supposedly had the Greeks on higher standard than the other occupied peoples for some reason but I doubt that meant allowing the building of Christian churches.
AFAIK The Orthodox Church had some sort of protection against taxation which is why it has such a huge property now since lots of Greeks passed on their property to the church to save it from being seased by the Turks. Not that this worked... Patriarchs were hanged too etc. All in all not a very "prefered" people we were
