On a related note, in a recent poll, 6 out of 10 Americans were opposed to a new tax cut.

How is that at all related to raising takes to Finland or even UK levels?

Because it shows that people are willing to set aside some of their personal income for the greater good.

if the average american saw how much we set aside here for the 'greater good' he'd soon change his mind.

Actually, it won't require a massive tax raise. It can be done with a 5% tax on business, which, for most companies already providing health care will mean lowered costs. The Labor Party USA has done a study on how it can be financed.

Have I mentioned I've been shanghaied onto the steering committee for the Jacksonville LP? Yep, I'm not just talking ****, I'm doing ****!

Not every compny provides health care, however, particularly for some lower tier jobs such as McDonalds. A 5% tax on these businesses would drive many marginal firms out of business.

It's a nice dream but Socialism isn't on the bush agenda the last time I checked.

Besides we went through this before in 1994 when the Democrats had the majority in the Congress, and it was overwhelmingly defeated. I remember clinton making it a big campaign push but after that happened, he completely dropped it.

Similiar to what Communist said, a Universal Health Care system in the US doesn't have to equal the massive welfare tax state that exists in Europe.

We already have a strong private system so the answer is a hybrid system involving building on the already strong private system and adding in minimal tax raises to support those that go without.
