Spiffor: IIRC there are two rightist parties in France, couldn't the one not from Chirac's party rebel? And is party discipline that ironclad or does it ever get broken with a no confidence vote?

If Blair could face down a grave challenge from his own party when his policy of following the US was extremely unpopular with the boby politic, I have every confidence that Gaulist government of Chirac, amoral a-hole he maybe, isn't loosing sleep over a rebellion stemming from such a popular policy.

It could also be that Putin genuinely wants Blix and crew inside Iraq verifying that there are no WMD, or that if we find any, that they are destroyed.

I wonder if the bad blood between Powell and Blix is what is causing the US to not ask for his help. Surely, he and his organization could be of real assistance.

If Blix is the issue, a compromise could be lifting the sanctions as soon as we allow Blix back in.

Chirac's party has tried to unite all rightist parties under its banner, and today's "second" rightist party is only led by some rebellious people who have rejected Chirac's offer. They have lost about 1/2 of the party in Chirac's hands however.
This party is pretty much irrelevant, even though it was the main opposition party last year, when the left was too much in shambles to oppose anything.
There is only one way Chirac can be ever worried by his MPs : he'd have to openly molest children while giving our nuclear arsenal to Mugabe. Such a move might bring him a no confidence vote

Not lifting the sanctions now!?! now that is outrageous... so what if a potential future US dominion has WOMD... there are others that have it already, what's wrong with new Iraq gov have a few or at least being examined by whomever to confirm all is in check later... sanctions after the war - that is for war crimes tribunal in Hague

I've just come back from the French Foreign Ministry site. Information si scarce, and the FFM wants the question of the sanctions to be "discussed at the UN", but doesn't show any enthusiasm or opposition now. France seems to favor the vote for a new resolution about it.

There shouldn't even be any discussion about sanctions.

I don't know what the Russians are smoking.

For years we heard about how the US/UK imposed sanctions were starving the children of Iraq to death and now there needs to be discussion about it?!?!?!?!!?

                    WTF ?

Because it requires an act of the UNSC to end the embargo. Of course, the Bushies want to see the UN destroyed, and have done a very good job at hamstringing it. If they simply decide to end the embargo themselves, they will be announcing the temproary end of the UNSC, at least until the neo-cons are thrown out of office.

Just like it took an act of the UN for the US/UK to go into Iraq.

Screw the UN, countries can trade all they want with Iraq now.

So Che, if Russia refuses to approve an end to the UNSC embargo, would you favor the USA refusing to honor the embargo and urging other nations to do the same? Or would you became a supporter of said embargo in support of your axis of appeasement freinds?
