This far in advance of 2008, it is far too early to speculate on a Republican nominee. After all, Bush himself came out of nowhere in a very short time.

It really depends on who wants it the most and who is most capable. At this point in time, I have no clue as to whom this might be.

Unfortunately, most capable doesn't fit into either the Republicans or Democrats thinking when it comes to who they pick to run for any political office. Money, and not ability/capability, seems the big decider for both parties. The sad thing is that enough of the voters are gullible enough to fall for it. The occasional competent that does run often gets discredited by his/her own party to maintain the status quo between the two parties.

It would be interesting to see either Laura Bush/Hillary Clinton match up, or Chelsea/one of the twins.

By contrast, there are 6 female governors, 14 female Senators, and the House minority leader is a woman.

Virginia elected a Black Governor back in 1990. As to which will happen first will depend on who runs. While Powell could win, he doesn't want to run last I had read. What could happen is that a Black or Woman, or a Black Woman, is elected Vice President, and then becomes President when something happens to the President (resignation, heart attack, etc). The real power in this country is the Senate and House Majority Leaders, and to a lesser degree the Senate and House Minority Leaders. They can have more real power than the President.

      Blanche K. Bruce (R-Mississippi), 1875-1881

      Edward W. Brooke (R-Massachusetts), 1967-1979

      Carol Moseley-Braun (D-Illinois), 1993-1999

If you want a black or a woman, how about Ms Rice (can't spell her first name)? Not that I know so much about her own political agenda, but she seems much brighter than GWB.

Oops; I did forget about Doug Wilder. Your Senate stats support what I said -- only 2 black senators elected since Reconstruction. I think your Vice President scenario is a good bet but, again, I think we'll see a woman VP before a black one, just because there are women positioned for that slot now, but not blacks. I'd actually be surprised if the Dems don't put a woman on the ticket in 2004, and they have several plausible choices -- as do the Republicans. But there is literally no black politician with a national -- or even potentially national -- profile, except Powell.

despite a class size amendment overwhelmingly voted in by the people of Florida limiting sizes of younger kids' classes, Bush says it's a no-go for money reasons

A good thing too! That refendum only confirms the nasty thoughts I have about Florida's population. Hell, you already have a deficit, and you want to make it infinetly worse? I mean, he HAD to cut money from the university system because of it.

And Jeb would have trounced Reno. Though, George P. Bush would be a better President... in 2012 .

Seriously, though, I doubt Hillary'll get it. She's made too many enemies, and only just won the usually solid Senate seat for New York...

Actually, IIRC, she won by a rather large margin (double digits, IIRC) and she won by a larger margin than the Schumer (the other NY senator) did - Of course, he was running against Damato, so it was a tougher race.

However, I don't think she will be a serious candidate in '08.

Are there any big stars emerging from the current war? Tommy Franks has gained a lot of credibility. However, we don't even know what party he is from. Meyers does not seem to have the charisma as did Powell. Ditto Rice. Rumsfeld is too old. Wolfowitz?

I thought he commander of the 3rd ID, 2nd Brigade had a lot of charisma.

                                So did Oliver North.
