  • Evangelicals in Post -war Iraq.

I am going to washington tomorrow, so i will be on a one week sabbatical from here. So I'll levae with this question:

What, if any, should be the gov. policy towards evangelicals setting up offices in Iraq and trying to convert the heathens while they supply humanitarian aid?

    Enjoy.

How's that going to look to the Muslim world. We "liberate" Iraq, bring in Christian missionaries...
To us, it is the BEAST.

What do you mean when you say evangelicals?

When I was a little kid evangelical was almost a sinonim(sp?) of Lutheran (the evangelical church), but now evangelicals are pentecostals and tv evangelists.

I dont think they will be successful, it is really hard to convert a muslim to christianity, it is not as easy as with people who practice tribal religions.

...this surely makes the action NOT resemble a religious war as it is already portrayed in thousands of mosques around the world. If not the war on Iraq has been reason enough for someone to call out for a Jihad, making neophytes among muslims surely is.

What I would like to see is radio free Iraq advocate the benefits of separation of church and state. With both cultural and religiouis diversity in the country, nothing else will work or, better, is acceptable.

We should permit missionaries to enter Iraq. Otherwise we would be violating one of our own core principles.

Ned, by this logic, I assume it would be OK if you let humanitarian aid sent by communist groups or islamist groups bent on proselytism ?

why not, after all in a new democratic iraq all religions should be equal. we allow imans to preach freely and try to convert people in our countries, why shouldn't missionaries be allowed to do the same in a new iraq.

Right now, it would be a bad idea to allow this. Having just treated the Iraqis to a healthy helping of Western invasion, following it up with a slice of Christian conversion as dessert would undoubtedly add to the Muslim world's already-obvious indigestion over the matter.

To suggest that this is a matter of free speech is ridiculous. These people obviously have the tacit approval of the Bush government. I'm frankly getting a bit nervous that the recent threatening of Syria is part of Bush's plan to bring about 'the end of days'. Someone tell me I'm just being over-anxious.
