Is it worth the effort?
Haven't used eDonkey. But you can try both.

I've just come back from uni for Easter, and I've got my computer hooked up to our home network, so I can use the broadband connection. I thought I'd give eDonkey a try, seeing as I now have a fast connection and no over-zealous firewalls blocking me.
I downloaded it, installed it, but it refuses to connect, to any server, no matter how long I leave it. The main server in our house has Tiny Personal Firewall, but it should flash up and alert if an unrecognised program tries to connect in or out of the network; so far it's done nothing.
Why can't I get it to connect?

If you get the Low ID message, it means you need to open a port. 4662 IIRC, but you can always read the webpage linked by the error message.

I had a hardware firewall that I needed to configure before eDonkey would even connect to any server. Since you have broadband that might also contain a firewall.

I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).

It probably means you don't have the audio codec most likely.
Check into the Nimo codec pack...

I uninstalled edonkey but it still tries to load on system startup.

avi? That's like saying your image viewer can't see bitmap files.

No, it's not.
The problem with .avi's today is they rely on a huge array of codecs.
There's about a bunch of different video formats out there (XViD, DivX, MPEG4, ASF, etc) and many of them come in .avi format. What's more, the audio is even different. You need many audio codecs installed for it to work properly in many videos also.
Nimo is a huge collection of the most common codecs in one file.
You really don't think they'd distribute things like movies in stock AVI do you? That'd be crazy...
AVI today is more or less a wrapper format for much more advanced formats.

Not more crazy than not denoting the file with the proper extension.

While it is quite confusing, it's not wrong per se.
AVI stands for Audio Video Interleaved, and was a media container format by design and implementation.
AVI isn't an actual codec itself, the typical codecs used are stuff like Indeo and Cinepak since they require very low CPU/memory usage, and are what some people mistakenly believe to be real AVIs.
So using an AVI as a container for more modern codecs like DivX, and XViD isn't crazy or wrong.
The "advantage" of using it as "avi" files is any DirectShow program can play them. Which is really useful -- DivX Player, Windows Media Player, Winamp, and tons of other programs actually play videos using DirectShow...
All you need to do is point it to an AVI file, and DirectShow can play it provided you've installed codecs.
Interesting factoid: ASF is essentially AVI 2.0. It's much superior, much less headaches, but people are stubborn and keep using AVI. Much like people use MP3 when there's much better formats out there.
