Is the plane still around today? Or did it get destroyed in the blast? I assume it's still around because those planes could fly pretty high.

It's in the Smithsonian now, IIRC.

Is it? I honestly don't remember seeing it, unless it was in some section I missed.

I know it was there a couple years ago, as I saw it on display. They've probably moved it out since then, however, as I don't believe it was a permanent exhibit. It's probably in some warehouse with the Ark of the Covenenant...

          Probably.

Put it this way; when I was there a year ago it wasn't there.

The test flight crashes were handled by an expert pilot, actually the same guy in both cases. He survived both times.
hmm, and no one got even a little suspicious?

The Smithsonian has a seperate air and space museum, which may be why you missed the Enola Gay if you visited the general collection.

--"What makes this aircraft special is that it is mechanically unstable."

As I understand it, all modern fighters are inherently unstable. It's the only way to get high manueverability at the required speeds.

The Vulcan Bomber...one badass looking plane.

Nice to see the XF-85 putting in an appearance. Surely the stupidest looking plane ever after the Caproni Ca-90. The Vulcan is a nice plane - I had a look inside one of the remaining ones about 20 years ago.

Anyway, here's another fave from the 50s: The F 100 Super Sabre.

And the Eurofighter. I love the delta/canard combo.

And here's the fighter version of the XB 70: the XF 108 Rapier - another great aircraft of the 50s along with the Avro Arrow and the F 104.

And another "Fighter of the Fifties" (am I biased - I hope so) the XF-107. Check out that cool intake.

And IMHO the greatest aircraft ever constructed: the Supermarine Spitfire.
